A summer of music. July 2015

This summer in Emilia-Romagna life is to the beat of music.  The proposals are wide ranging and will be held in excellent locations both in big towns and small ones, at the sea, in the cities of art and in the Apennines, which will be the backdrop to many events, many of which are free of charge with big names in music.

From the huge calendar of events, we would like to highlight some of the main festivals and summer series, which run the gamut of every kind of music, from rhythm and blues to pop and rock, from classical music to contemporary sounds and folk, offering something for every kind of audience and preference.

Our journey among the notes starts at the beginning of July with the 15th edition of Emilia Romagna Festival, the biggest summer festival of the region which offers 41 events from July 18 to September 16, located throughout the provinces of Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena and Ravenna and nearby areas, and as always, in exceptional places dedicated to the discovery of nature, architectonic traditions and culture.  "Gateway to the Indies", a journey to discover the Oriente and faraway lands, is the theme of this year's edition.

Not to miss in Piacenza and the nearby towns in Val Tidone is the “Val Tidone Festival” - which will run until October 30 - the wandering concert series among castles, villas and the most charming corners of the valley, featuring classical and ethnic-jazz music, with young emerging artists alongside well known international and national stars such as: the Duo Massimiliano Alloisio/Loris Stefanuto (Saturday, July 4, Pecorara), Javier Girotto & Aires Tango (Sunday, July 5, Agazzano), Fabio Concato & Band feat. Fabrizio Bosso (Tuesday, July 7, Gragnano Trebbiense), Natalie Roman together with Enzo Peroni and Donatella Tacchinardi (Sunday, July 19, Nibbiano), Route 66 Quintet (Wednesday, July 22, Borgonovo Val Tidone), Eva Mei (Sunday, July 26, Sarmato), Antonella Ruggiero feat. Mark Harris and Roberto Colombo (Friday, July 31, Pecorara).  The series closes out this summer in Agazzano, on Saturday, August 1, with Ayami Ikeba on the piano, and it will start up again in September.

The sounds and notes of summer will accompany the public in their discovery of serendipity, those happy coincidences, those alchemies that Music in the Castle gives to its public.  This Emilia festival, on schedule until August 20 with free admission, will be held during 25 magical summer evenings in unique places with extraordinary singer-songwriters, great artists, and prestigious orchestras, hosted in castles, fortresses, parish churchyards, old farmhouse yards, gardens of ancient villas, squares and places usually closed to the public in the Lands of Verdi near Parma and reaching both Piacenza and Reggio Emilia.  Coming up is the style of Alessandro Bergonzoni (Thursday, July 2, Fidenza, Pr), the insistent rhythm of the Imperfect Dancers Compagnia Balletto90 (Sunday, July 5, Fontanellato, Pr), the show of Marco Baldini (Friday, July 17, Fontanellato, Pr), followed by the concert of the Orchestra Regionale of Emilia Romagna (Saturday, July 18, Alseno, Pc) and from the splendid Syria (Sunday, July 19, Sissa Trecasali, Pr), just to name a few.

For those who choose to stop in Reggio Emilia, they will certainly be entertained on July 1 downtown with one of the most popular Italian djs in the world, Benny Benassi.  Not very far away, in the town of Casalgrande at the Horse Stables of Villa Spalletti, and  in Albinea, inside historic and artistically interesting buildings, national jazz fans should come to see the excellent shows here such as that of Tandem, with Fabrizio Bosso and Julian Oliver Mazzariello (July 15, Casalgrande), the Aaron Goldberg Trio (July 18, Albinea), and The Bad Plus Joshua Redman (July 20, Albinea).

Also in Emilia this summer the prestigious wandering festival of ethic and folk music will be held.  The 20th edition of Mundus, on schedule from July 9 to August 15, will spread its vibrations among the territories in and around Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara.  Opening this festival is Bandadriatica in Scandiano (Re); Wednesday, July 15 in Cento there will be the Night of Drums of Cento (Fe); Monday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 21 there will be The Soul Story (Carpi, Mo, and Cento, Fe).  Among the other events, we also recommend the concert of Sarah Jane Morris (Casalecchio di Reno, Bo) and Dobet Gnahore’ (Carpi, Mo), Wednesday, July 29.

For all those who love soul in Europe, going to the Rufus Thomas Park of Porretta Terme (Bo) is a must.  It is here that the 28th edition of the Porretta Soul Festival from July 23 to 26 will be held with legendary musicians and big stars of soul in their only European concert. For sure there will be excellent artists such as Osaka Monaurail from Japan, Frank Bey & Anthony Paule All Star Band feat. Sweet Nectar, and Sax Gordon.

On Saturday, July 11 Bologna will offer the special event Thauma, Specialies Dies, a festival in which music and performances of more than 50 artists in twelve concerts will celebrate the origins and the transformation of the Dark and Goth cultures, hosted in unique places such as the Madonna della Neve church. Thursday, July 9 the historic band and worldwide rock legends AC/DC will ignite the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola with their energy and unmistakeable riffs for an unmissable event.

The musical journey continues with Ferrara under the stars, in the splendid setting of Piazza Castello and the Honor Courtyard of the Estense Castle.  This festival, which runs the gamut of independent music, once again this year will host international stars.  In fact there will be the only Italian performance, on Sunday, July 19, of The Jesus and Mary Chain performing “Psychocandy” in its entirety, and the only Italian headline show of George Ezra, Tuesday, July 21, and the Savages, Friday, July 31, who will close out the 2015 edition.

Unexpected sounds will again be at the heart of the 50th edition of the concert series Musica Pomposa, held in the evocative setting of the thousand year old Abbey of Pomposa, near the Lidi di Comacchio.  Opening this festival is Summer Mandolin, on Thursday, July 16; on Saturday, July 20, Vivaldi and Bach will face off; and Thursday, July 30 Misa Criolla.  The concerts continue until August 27.

In Ravenna there will be the 54th International Festival of Organ Music, the most historic in Italy, in which every year the best international artists participate playing the ancient Mascioni organ in the very beautiful Basilica di San Vitale, a UNESCO heritage site.  The first date of this event, on schedule until August 24, is Sunday, July 27 - with the performance of the Polish organ player Slawomir Kaminski.

A lot of music also on the beach, at the first light of dawn, for a unique sensorial experience.  Night owls and early birds will come together at the bathing establishments of Pinarella (Ra), every Sunday until August 23, with Musical Dawns; at the Lidi di Comacchio (Fe), with the suave notes of flamenco and tango, classic, modern and contemporary music, Irish folk and swing; and finally, on the beaches of Cesenatico, with concerts of soul & funk, taranta, and musicals.

Delicate and suave music, again in Cesenatico, can be heard also in the calm Piazzetta delle Conserve for the occasion of "Notturni alle Conserve", on schedule from July 7 to August 18.

Just inland from Rimini, the lovely town of bel Valmarecchia, a Villanova archeological site and the home town of the Malatesta dynasty, will host the 31st edition of the Verucchio Music Festival, under the artistic direction of Ludovico Einaudi, on schedule from July 17 to 31.  Taking the stage are big names such as Xavier Rudd and The United Nations, on Sunday, July 19, The Kooks, Wednesday, July 22, and Kings of Convenience, Tuesday, July 28.

In Rimini from July 2 to 30 the high quality summer musical appointment is with "Percuotere la mente", the festival that focuses on combining tradition and renewal, with ethnic influences and some touches of experimentation.  Among the star guests are Paola Turci, Stefano Bollani, and the group Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express.
