A summer of music – The festivals and concerts in Emilia-Romagna 2017

Emilia Romagna has much to tell us, and when it does so with music, listening to it is even more enjoyable both for our ears and our heart.

During the summer, this region is at its peak, and its musical waves will go all along the Via Emilia from north to south, in an explosion of genres to be enjoyed in the pleasant evening hours of summer, by the sea, in the cool air of the higher altitudes on the inland hills, and in the clubs and famous locations for gathering and enjoying music.

Let yourself be taken away by these waves which start at the Val Tidone Festival, the traveling musical festival in and around Piacenza. The festival will stop at castles, villas, buildings and squares and the most suggestive corners of Val Tidone, from Piacenza to the smaller towns, and it will host the International Music Competitions of the valley as well as many world famous musicians. Until November 25.

The area in and around Piacenza will entertain us for a whole month also with the notes of "Summertime in Jazz", a traveling festival that stops in the most lovely corners of the Val d’Arda and the Val Trebbia. From the heart of Piacenza to towns such as Bobbio, Travo, Vernasca, Vigoleno and Castell'Arquato we will be delighted by the presence of artists such as Deaf Kaki Chumpy, Tamboo Blues & Jazz Society, Ensemble Bossonconcept, Renzo Ruggieri Group and Amelia Smooth Jazz. Until August 2.

In Castell'Arquato (Pc), the date with music is at the "Festival Illica 2017". At this opera festival, on August 5, the 30th International Luigi Illica Award will be presented, one of the oldest and most prestigious awards in Italy, created to honor excellence in the field of opera, conducting, directing, dramaturgy and creative literature, music critics and other similar cultural activities.

Always in the Emilia area, back again this year is the event Music in the Castle. 36 events with shows, concerts, chats with writers and musicians, words and music with actors, comics, artists and sports champions, which will be held in extraordinary places - fortresses, castles, historic parks, church porches and cloisters, ancient courtyards - of the areas in and around Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Cremona. Until August 26.

In Bologna we let ourselves be taken away by "Summer Sound Acts". This festival hosts the many forms of musical theater expressed through the combination of music with other artistic expressions. Manga gets combined with opera in The Barber in comics, a cappella singing in Il Don Giovanni, traditional opera in Quel fragoroso silenzio, theater and music together in La Barca di Venezia per Padova, a musical with Dialogo e Follie and even pop music with Piene di Destino-PattiAugust 10, 17, 19, 23, 27.

In Ferrara Puedes Summer Night will welcome us every evening under the old walls in Via Baluardi with great concerts on the stage accompanied by tasty street food until light at night, lounge bar for excellent cocktails but also workshops and entertainment for children. From August 20 there will also be Buskernight until the final concert of the Ferrara Buskers Festival on August 27. On schedule from August 19 to 27, the Ferrara Buskers Festival is the International Festival of Street Music now in its 30th edition, and the standard bearer of street music and art in Italy. The Festival is an exciting trip around the world looking for familiar and exotic sounds, and an entertaining treasure hunt for the most original instruments, the most imaginative performances, and the flashiest costumes. More than 1000 artists from 35 different countries will flood the city – not just musicians but also jugglers, acrobats, tightrope walkers and clowns.

We arrive in Romagna at the concerts in inland towns and near the beach where sound waves will mix with those of the sea.

Keeping with the theme of buskers Comacchio will host the preview of the great Buskers Festival. Street musicians from all over the world will perform on the most intriguing corners of downtown of this lagoon city, enchanting everyone with the voice of their instruments and the rhythms of their lands. August 18.

Soul Beaches will rock us following a rhythm that comes from New Orleans and lands at the Romagna seaside. On the beaches of Porto Corsini, Marina di Ravenna, Punta Marina Terme, but also in downtown Ravenna, the best musicians of world soul are ready to take you to the roots of African American music. July 13-30.

And what is better than waiting for dawn to break on the horizon listening to sweet sounds played live in front of us? The public access beach in Cesenatico will host "Dawn Concerts" with the great performances of Nashville & Blackbones,  Ave de Paso, Cristina di Pietro Quartet, Kenneth Bailey & CMS Soul Revue, and Lovesick Duo. July 16, 23 and August 6, 15, 20.

While admiring the historic mosaics of the city of Ravenna, let yourself be enchanted by the sounds of the "56th International Festival of Organ Music", the first and oldest organ festival in Italy as well as the longest running one in Europe. Every Monday until August 28 the best international organists will perform inside the Basilica di San Vitale (Unesco heritage site) playing the ancient Mascioni organ.

Moving on to the parvis of the Basilica di San Francesco, we can take part in the concerts of "Sotto le stelle di Galla Placidia" to enjoy outside evenings of Argentinian, Irish, Balkan, and Italian and foreign indie music. Performing soon are Ochtopus, Birkin Tree and the singer Chiara Torterolo, Magela Pardal; then there will be a concert for three sopranos and piano in honor of "Maria Callas vs Wanda Osiris", and lastly the dancers Loredana Sartori and Roberto Angelica will perform. August 11, 15, 18, 22, 25.

Downtown Rimini will be hit with music at "Percuotere la Mente" (Pummel your Mind). From Great Britain to the United States, passing through Italian traditions with crossovers into folk and indie rock, there are seven events in the setting of the Corte degli Agostiniani. The prologue is with Cat Power, then Le Luci della Centrale Elettrica, The Divine Company, Billy Brag and Radical Face. There will also be tributes to the Italian singer-songwriter from Genoa, the eternal Battisti. June 7, July 4, 12, 25, 30 and August 6, 24.

Let’s stay a little while longer in Rimini because someone else is coming: The Chemical Brothers, on July 29, who make even the sand dance at the nearby public access beach in Piazzale Boscovich, and this summer’s star duo Fedez and J-Ax who on their 2017 tour will stop right in front of the Park Rock Fair of the city on August 4.

The best of today's hits will land at "Deejay & Riccione Estate". Besides the life radio shows of Radio Deejay in Piazzale Roma and at Aquafan, there will also be the final of the contest Deejay On Stage for singers and bands, as well as live concerts with artists such as Ermal Meta, Francesco Gabbani, and Benji&Fede just to name a few. Until August 26.

Inland from Rimini, the Verucchio Music Festival, hosted in the splendid village of Valmarecchia, a Villanovan  archeological site, reaches its 33rd edition. Then we take it up a gear to go up to San Leo, where the breathtaking views are the backdrop to the great music of the San Leo Festival. The last concert will be held in the big tower of the fortress, and those who wish to can go on a guided tour of the castle beforehand. On August 8, the violinist Giuseppe Gibboni will perform, an up and coming talent of international concerts, young winner of the program on RAI 1 “Prodigi” with a recital dedicated to the most important and challenging works of his instrument.

In Coriano on August 11 at Laugh for Bacchus the festival of senses begins at 8:30pm with a big buffet dinner that offers traditional recipes revisited with artisanal creativity, exalted by wines from the Santini winery and by extra virgin olive oil produced locally. Once the palate is satisfied, there will be room for the spirit with the performance under the moonlight by the comic Giobbe Covatta.

We will stay at a high altitude because in Santarcangelo di Romagna, among the summer events at Estate Viva on August 15 there will be the king of liscio Raoul Casadei to celebrate all together his eightieth birthday with a big party for all those who love Romagna folklore.
