The Way of the Gods

Dating back to the time of the Etruscans and still in existence today between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany is a route that has connected Bologna to Florence for thousands of years, called the "Via degli Dei"/The Way of the Gods.

From Fiesole to Felsina, now Bologna, the Etruscans walked this route to develop trade and extend their domination over the Padana Plains for at least four centuries (VII-IV century BC).  It was then that the Romans, having founded the colony of Bononia in 189 BC, felt the need to guarantee a connection to Arezzo and Rome passing through the Apennines and they built, along the Etruscan trail, an actual road.

Also in the Middle Ages people continued to walk or go by horseback along this ancient route, the best one for crossing through the Apennines.  The Roman road, which crumbled over time, was replaced by a simple path, like a donkey road, without paving, narrow, and used only by travelers who needed to go along this route.

What the Via degli Dei is today

Ideal for those who love hiking and mountain biking, this trail is today one of the main attractions of the Tuscan Emilian Apennines.  Not only because it offers the possibility to discover lands full of history and faraway from the classic tourist destinations, but also because it represents a chance to spend a vacation wandering the outdoors, great for adults, young people and families with children as routes can be organized based on the number of days available and the ability of the hikers.

Rebuilt starting in the 1990s, this path goes through numerous places of natural interest and great landscapes at heights of about 1000 meters above sea level.  In some points along the path you can see the ancient paving which is still here after 2000 years of history.

Why "Via degli Dei"

The name probably comes from the names of some of the peaks this path crosses over, such as Mount Adonis, Monzuno (Mount Jove), Mount Venus, and Mount Lunario (Lua was the Roman goddess of atonement).

Services along the path

Hikers are guided along their route by the markings and signs positioned at the beginning or along the path and at the most important intersections, with information on the towns, the altitude of the starting place or destinations, duration and the number of the path.

On the official website of the Via degli Dei, in the section Where to Sleep and Where to Eat there is a wide selection of places to stay and eat that travelers can go to along their itinerary, to experience and enjoy this region to the fullest by taking it slow.

How many sections of the path are there?

The itinerary is divided into five sections: Bologna – Badolo; Badolo - Madonna dei Fornelli; Madonna dei Fornelli – Monte di Fo’; Monte di Fo’ – San Piero a Sieve; San Piero a Sieve – Florence.  Two regions are crossed through as are two provinces - Bologna and Florence - as well as fourteen municipals.
