Archaeology in Emilia Romagna

Thanks to the unique geography of its territory, which is bridge and border between the North and the Center-South of Italy, the region of Emilia Romagna has assumed over centuries an important role in the social and political affairs of our country.

In its historical development, due to a series of continuous overlapping of people and cultures, a constant dichotomy within this land is pointed out, presenting more or less significant changes in the borders division between Emilia and Romagna, but which, in the historical context, is a continuum that reaches the current regional configuration.

Some studies identify the historic subdivision starting from the pre-protohistoric age stating that if the Terramare settlements took place to the West, the Villanova culture settled to the East of the Panaro river, identifying it as a first natural boundary between the two subregions.

Our review of the past history concerns a period that starts from the villages of Terramare, dated around the half of the II millennium BC, to the Villanovan settlements to continue with the prosperity of the Etruria valley between the IX and the half of the IV century BC, followed by the Gauls, the Roman expansion and the establishment of the Byzantines.

Treasures and remains of ancient cultures give voice to history and will guide the visitor into an ancient Emilia Romagna through the network of sites, parks and museums which are representative of the Emilia Romagna archaeological heritage.
