Autumn historical reenactments - 2014

The autumn season in Emilia Romagna will offer a series of historic reenactments and festivals in costume hosted by the most beautiful inland towns, which will give visitors a valid opportunity to spend a weekend dedicated to conviviality and learning, both about history and culture.

In Forlimpopoli visitors can attend “Un de’ in’t la Roca ad Frampul” - dialect for "a day in the fortress of Forlimpopoli".  The impressive fortress in this town, one of the most beautiful in Romagna,  will host the festivities ordered in the 1500s by the countess Battistina Savelli in honor of the return of her groom Brunoro II Zampeschi from France.  Merchants, witches, craftsmen, charlatans, jugglers, fire-eaters, soldiers, flag-wavers and drummers will perform in breathtaking exhibitions and shows, and there will also be a period market and renaissance dinners.  September 11-14.

Not far from Bologna, the lovely town of Medicina will celebrate “Il Barbarossa”, an event that reenacts what happened in 1154, with the arrival of the emperor Frederick I of Swabia, called Barbarossa, who liberated this area from Bologna rule.  For the occasion, this town will be taken over by a festive medieval atmosphere thanks to about two thousand figures and artists who will fill the squares and streets of historic downtown with shows, exhibitions, dancing and even a medieval market.  September 19-21.

The magnificent Rocca delle Caminate Park in Meldola, just inland from Forlì, with eight hectares of green space, will be exceptionally opened to the public for the event "Falcons and Bows", which this year will be dedicated to the descent of Charles VIII of France and to the Rape of the Caminate Women by the French soldiers.  Among the highlights of this historic event are the Mayor's Archery Tournament and the Historical Archery Tournament named after Lucrezia Pico dells Mirandola.  Visitors will be able to participate in games and medieval duels, admire the flight of over 30 birds of prey and see demonstrations of ancient crafts. September 20-21.

That same weekend on Sunday, September 21, visitors in the area of Forlì should go to Modigliana (Fc) and relive the “Feste dell’Ottocento” (19th century festivities) with the atmosphere and historical settings of Silvestro Lega (1826-1895), a realist painter from that era.  Music, costumes, folk dances, craftsmen and big banquets will be the side events of this unmissable art exhibition of Tableaux Vivants by this macchiaiolo artist, on display in the most interesting parts of the town.

The last weekend in September will be dedicated to the exceptional “A.D. 1387 Battaglia a Terra del Sole” (Battle in Terra del Sole in 1387), again not far from Forlì.  Twenty-six of the best groups in Europe, including historical reenactment professionals and merchants from Italy, Hungary, France, Belgium, Ukraine, Czech Republic, England and Poland, will join together in an accurate and realistic reconstruction of the period from 1360 to 1410, with more than 300 figures in period costumes and more than 50 medieval tents.  The heart of the event will be the battle of 1387 won by Francesco Ordelaffi from Forlì against the troops of Ventura dei Landi, dal Verme and Guido d´Asciano.  September 27-28.

Moving north towards Rimini, in the beautiful Val Marecchia with its breathtaking landscapes and quaint towns and castles, here in the imposing Montefeltro fortress in the walled town of San Leo, there will be the closing event of the series "In the Era of the Duke", called "The Art of Jousting".  The program of this event includes a series of ceremonies and activities in preparation for the tournament which will take place in 2015.  Music, art, dancing, crafts and guided tours will create the perfect setting for the fashion show in period costumes of the various delegation invited to the tournament and for the selection of the Honorary King, the soldier who will open the tournament. October 4-5.

Quite original is the event held in Borello, a town near Cesena, called the "Miner's Festival" which is aimed at allowing visitors to experience the lost world of solfataras by carefully creating different scenes from the era in which there was heavy mining in this area with participants in original period costumes.  Adding to this event is the photography exhibition and a show of relics belonging to the world of mining, as well as expos, dancing in the evenings, guided tours of the Formignano Mine and helicopter flights over the mining area.  And of course there will also be a market of local and seasonal foods, and antiques, as well as food stands which will offer a typical miner's menu. October 5.

At "Aloisa's Night" in Grazzano Visconti, a lovely neo-medieval historic town in Val Nure near Piacenza, on Saturday, October 4, visitors can participate in a cursed evening of pirates surrounded by noble Englishmen, armed guards and gangs of buccaneers ready for anything.  Group games, bar fights, fireworks, and armed duels will be held all throughout this celebration. At the Hostaria de la Paura (Restaurant of Fear), in the evening guests can taste the libations offered by the "Sguercio" (a scary host) while the town's restaurants will offer elaborate themed menus.

Also in Grazzano Visconti, on October 12 there will be a memorable duel which will catapult visitors back in time to seven centuries ago: the Medieval Archery Tournament.  The best archers will face off in a unique challenge in which wooden bows and goose feather arrows will provide quite a bit of entertainment.  But the archers will also compete along the streets of the town in extravagant head to head competitions or also in groups.  This particular tournament, which attracts participants from all over Italy, will surely be a great opportunity for visitors to experience the spirit of medieval archery, the art of war, hunting methods and a fun pastime.
