Celebrating Ferragosto 2015

The week of Ferragosto, the mid-August holiday celebrating the Assumption, from Monday, August 10 to Sunday, August 16, will welcome guests with cultural events, concert series and music festivals, excursions and guided tours, town fairs, markets and many exhibitions.

Music will again be the focus of these mid-August celebrations.

Romagna will offer many interesting events, beginning with the Emilia Romagna Festival. Monday, August 10 in Forlì, at the Chiostro dei Musei di San Domenico, the bassoon of Paolo Carlini together with the piano of Matteo Fossi will take on the first ever performance of “Totem 3 (signs) for bassoon and piano”, a piece written by Ennio Morricone and dedicated to Carlini. Sunday, August 16 the Emilia Romagna Festival Career Award will be given to the Peruvian Juan Diego Flórez, one of the greatest tenors of our time, in the historic Palazzo Fantini in Tredozio (FC).  For this occasion, the very young tenor Ivan Ayon, a student of Florez, will perform.

On the beaches of Cesenatico (Fc), night owls and early birds will have a unique experience thanks to "Concerts at dawn".  The event is at 6.00 in the morning on Saturday, August 15 when, with the first light of day, you can hear the sounds of "Broadway, 6 am", a musical for a string and voice quartet. Delicate and suave music, again in Cesenatico, can be heard also in the calm Piazzetta delle Conserve for the occasion of "Nights at the Conserve" where on Tuesday, August 11 Kyknos Quartet will take the stage with music by A. Part, F. Grutzmacher, J. De Boismortier, C. Saint-Saens, J. Werner, A. Jobim, and G. Bizet.

In the city of Ravenna there is a double event.  At the 54th International Organ Music Festival, the oldest in Italy, every year the best international artists participate by performing on the ancient Mascioni organ in the beautiful Basilica di San Vitale, a UNESCO heritage site.  Taking the stage on Monday, August 10 will be the organist Roman Perucki.  For the occasion of “Sotto le Stelle di Galla Placidia, on the porch of the Basilica di San Francesco, just a few steps away from the tomb of Dante Alighieri, on Friday, August 14 Lele il Saraceno will perform and on Sunday, August 16 Andrea Capezzuoli and Company.

In Emilia, there will be plenty of music at the 20th edition of Mundus, an ethnic and folk music festival.  There will be many great artists performing.  Monday, August 10 Antonio Forcione and Adriano Adewale (Italy-Brazil) will perform in Correggio, Tuesday, August 11 the Quintorigo & Roberto Gatto (Italy) in Reggio Emilia, Wednesday, August 12 Maria Pia de Vito and Huw Warren (Italy-Great Britain) in Carpi, and on Saturday, August 15 Rosario Giuliani & Luciano Biondini, in Reggio Emilia.

There will also be many events dedicated to art and culture, and some festivals with wide-ranging and completely new ideas.

Classic theater will take over Sarsina, just inland from Forlí, with four shows at the Plautus Festival. Monday, August 10 “Plauto e la Cultura Classica” will take the stage, hosted by Valerio Massimo Manfredi; Tuesday, August 11 there will be the highly anticipated national premiere of “Il mio nome è Nessuno – L’Ulisse”, with the extraordinarily talented Sebastiano Lo Monaco; Thursday, August 13 Vanessa Gravina will perform in “Lisistrata”; and Sunday, August 16 Paolo Graziosi will star in “Edipo in Compagnia”.

Evenings during Ferragosto will be dedicated to culture in Ravenna with Mosaics by Night which offers guided tours and free itineraries in the heart of this city of mosaics along with extraordinary openings of Unesco monuments and historic and archeological sites.

Ferrara will become a hotbed of cocktail hours with live music and concerts, cultural events, sporting events, food and wine and entertainment every evening under the ancient walls of the city, for the occasion of Puedes Summer Night.

During the week, there will also be a wide range of choices in terms of good food, with town fairs and events dedicated to cooking traditions and local products.

Among these, worth mentioning are the Wheat Fair in Gattatico (Re), a tribute to ancient crafts of the 1900s, with comic shows and Liscio dancing (August 6-25); the tasty Pumpkin and its Cappellaccio (stuffed pasta) Fair in San Carlo (Fe, August 12-23); the Old Flavors Fair in Premilcuore (Fc, August 12-13);  the Fair of San Cassiano in Comacchio (August 13);  the traditional Great Fishermen's Fish Fry on schedule for August 14 on the beach in Cesenatico; and the Hospitality Fair in Porto Garibaldi (Fe, August 14).

Monday, August 10 everyone will be looking towards the sky to admire the shooting stars on the magical night of Saint Lawrence.  For this occasion, there will be celebrations in Gatteo, where Saint Lawrence is the patron saint, and where the evening will end with a magnificent fireworks display.  In Brisighella, Faenza and Casola Valsenio guided stargazing will be accompanied by tastings and concerts.  There will be fireworks in Cervia, too, where there is also the traditional midnight swim.  There will be special guided stargazing events at the Museo della Bonifica in Argenta (Fe), at the Osservatorio Astronomico del Museo del Cielo e della Terra in San Giovanni in Persiceto (Bo), and on the lawn of the Uccelliera in Lizzano in Belvedere (Bo).

Also, a full calendar of guided tours and excursions will welcome visitors allowing them to discover unusual artistic treasures and unexpected places.

One such place is the amazing Marshes of Comacchio (Fe) which offer nature lovers one of the most uncontaminated environments inside the area of the Po Delta Park, where flamingoes nest.  Or the mini cruise along the coast, leaving from the canal port of Porto Garibaldi (Fe), which crosses through the Fattibello Marsh to get to the Stazione Foce.  Lunch is served on board, with a menu of fresh fish.  Another very special place is where butterflies are born, live and fly freely, resting on flowers and attracted by the aromas and colors of visitors at the Butterfly § Co. House in the seaside town of Milano Marittima, where butterflies can be seen up close, on flowers or on big ficus, banana, and other leaves.

For art lovers there is also a full calendar of exhibitions going on in the cities and towns of art in Emilia Romagna, and they are the perfect invitation to spend a pleasant weekend discovering fascinating places.

Among the opportunities for visitors, there are the many tourist cards, such as the Card del Ducato, a pass to visit the castles of Parma and Piacenza with discounts and advantages, and Romagna Visit Card, the tourism card for Romagna - Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini - with free admissions and discounts for many cultural events as well as wellness, fun and access to the theme parks like Mirabilandia and Italia in Miniatura, and food and wine discounts.
