Everyone at the table for mushrooms and truffles! - October and November 2014

The autumn season is characterized by new and typical smells and flavors at the table.  This year the season has been quite good for products that grow in the underbrush, such as mushrooms and truffles.  In the kitchen you can use them to make tasty recipes while in the areas where they grow they will become the subject of many fairs and festivals, which in turn become happy meeting places for enthusiasts, professionals or those who just love to eat good food!

The month of October began with a traditional journey into the flavors of the Bologna hills and nearby areas with the "Tartufesta" (truffle festival) (October and November schedule) which has returned to enliven the streets and squares of Apennine towns.  This event is a plethora of markets, delicious dishes, tastings and initiatives dedicated to autumn products and in particular to the prized white truffle of the Bologna hills.  Delicious "Tartumenus" will be offered in the participating restaurants and interesting "Tartuvisite" will help guests discover this territory.  October 4, 5, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 and November 1, 2, 9, 16.

The lovely town just inland from Rimini, Sant’Agata Feltria, which is proudly known as "Truffle City", every Sunday in October will host the “National Fair of the Prized White Truffle".  Along with national and international dishes and recipes based on mushrooms and truffles, visitors will also find a show of all kinds of autumn products that this generous Apennine land has to offer such as chestnuts, honey, herbs, diary and agricultural products and even rural crafts and arts.  October 5, 12, 19, 26.

There will be a lot of entertainment and conviviality in Pecorara, near Piacenza, for the "24th provincial festival of truffles and underbrush products".  This cultural food event will include everything from typical autumn products to crafts and hobby items, delicious recipes, prizes for the best truffles and mushrooms, a truffle dog competition, music and even photography shows.  October 19.

Truffles grow naturally also on the green hills around the town of Dovadola, near Forlì, where on October 19 and 26 the 48th king of the table fair will be held.  The "sfogline", women expert at making pasta by hand using a rolling pin, are preparing to roll out at least 2,000 eggs worth of tagliatelle (approximately 20,000 grams of flour will be used), which will be served with more than 3 quintals of meat sauce along with truffle flakes.  These traditional dishes will be accompanied by delicious Romagna wines.  Besides truffles, visitors can also buy typical autumn products, such as chestnuts, medlars, jujubes, mushrooms, and honey, or walk around a huge street market.  Music, exhibitions, games for children and the award for the best truffles at the fair will round out this event.

Another event not to be missed, on Sunday, October 26, will be held near Bologna in San Lazzaro di Savena, the "Flavors of our Apennines".  San Lazzaro is located on the northern border of the Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa Park, a unique landscape with sinkholes, ponors, grottos and valleys, and rolling hills, and here visitors can wander among the stalls of street vendors selling truffles, mushrooms, fruit, plants and aromatic herbs, cold cuts, cheese, marmalade, jam, honey and new wine.  There will also be markets, live music and tastings of local products.

In October and November there will be many opportunities in the town of Calestano, near Parma, to taste the Fragno Black Truffle at the national fair, now in its 24th edition, set up to celebrate this typical local product.  Besides enjoying truffle lunches in local restaurants and at food stands, looking around the markets, stands and the truffle market, more adventurous visitors can also take part in excursions and interesting guided tours of the areas where truffles grow.  October 19, 26 and November 2, 9, 15, 16.

The typical seasonal products will be on display also in Mesola, near Ferrara, where the traditional event "Autumn Flavors" will take place.  At the food stands, gluttons will be delighted by several recipes, including those made with the white truffle found in the woods in Mesola, while at the market exhibition visitors can find many traditional products, collectibles and small crafts.  And for those who would like to take advantage of this event to get to know the local area, there will be free guided bike tours into the Great Mesola Woods, to the Museum of the Woods and Deer, to the Este Castle in Mesola or by boat along the Po in Goro, all of which are great opportunities to explore this region.  October 31 and November 1-2.

Mushrooms and truffles are also among the delights that can be found at the "28th olive and autumn products fair" in Coriano, a town just inland from Rimini in the valley of the Conca river, known for the quality if its extra-virgin olive oil and for its many presses that can be visited.  The oil and other products will be offered in abundance along with Romagna wines, honey and its derivatives, cheeses, natural and macrobiotic products, fruit, plants, flowers, and even crafts, garden tools and sports equipment.  There will also be themed exhibitions, demonstrations of ancient Romagna crafts, conventions and tastings to round out this great autumn festival.  November 16 and 23.
