Once again this year, the program of events of this music festival will offer concerts by well known artists as well as new performers, tradition and new trends, and Italian, European, American and South American musicians. Crossroads 2012 will explore the various facets of jazz in stimulating and creative ways, from February 25 to May 27.
The opening concert will be held at the Teatro De André in Casalgrande (Re) on February 25. Inaugurating this important festival will be a trio with famous jazz, latin and pop artists: the saxophonist Javier Girotto, the unmistakeable singer Peppe Servillo, and the pianist Natalio Mangalavite.
In the three months of the festival there will be many events of particular interest.
Quite spectacular, for example, are the concerts with the multimedia quintet with Paolo Fresu, Roswell Rudd, Danilo Rea, martux_m and Filippo Bianchi in Correggio (Re) on May 5 at Teatro in Asioli, and that of Memorie di Adriano, with songs by Adriano Celentano played by musicians such as Peppe Servillo, Fabrizio Bosso, Javier Girotto, Rita Marcotulli, Furio Di Castri and Mattia Barbieri in Imola (Bo) on May 10 at Teatro dell’Osservanza.
The darlings of the audience, the singer Petra Magoni and the bassist Ferruccio Spinetti, whose duo "Musica Nuda" has been one of the strongest on the scene, will take the stage in Russi (Ra) on April 19 at the Teatro Comunale.
Magical music with Portuguese undertones will be created by the seductive duo of Maria João with the pianist Mário Laginha in Massa Lombarda (Ra) on March 8 at the Sala del Carmine; while music from South America will be presented by the singer and multi-talented musician from Argentina Daniel Melingo, whose sextet Maldito Tango has reinvented the symbolic dance of Buenos Aires (Rimini, April 15, Teatro degli Atti).
Other big names on schedule at Crossroads are the quintet of the drummer Roberto Gatto in Longiano (Fc) on March 16 at Teatro Petrella, and the trio of the amazing Japanese pianist Hiromi in Ravenna on April 29 at Teatro Alighieri.
There will also be many high quality jazz singers present: from the very young (she is just twelve years old!) Gioia Persichetti, in a duo with the pianist Stefania Tallini in Massa Lombarda (Ra) on March 30; to the well known voices (with awards from DownBeat) of Kurt Elling who will close the festival on May 27 in Santarcangelo (Rn) at Teatro Supercinema, and that of Gretchen Parlato in Longiano (Fc) on March 21, as well as Napoleon Maddox, one of the most innovative voices of American hip hop (Modena, April 20, La Tenda), and the Korean Youn Sun Nah, the new jazz queen in Europe, who will be in Imola (Bo) on May 6.
Numerous other events will complete the long musical season of Crossroads 2012.
In the month of March the festival will host: the quartet of Cheryl Porter, with a repertoire ranging from jazz and soul to gospel in Cesenatico (Fc) on March 10 at Teatro Comunale. There will also be two nights held at Cassero Teatro Comunale in Castel San Pietro Terme (Bo), with the group Ja Vigiu Plamja of the singer Silvia Donati and a trio with Daniele D’Agaro, Mauro Ottolini and Zeno de Rossi (the 17th), and with the quartet co-directed by two greats of the tenor saxophone, Dave Liebman and Ellery Eskelin (the 18th). The quintet of the vocalist Eloisa Atti with her tribute to Billie Holiday will be held in Massa Lombarda (Ra) on the 23rd; the unbridled Pocket Brass Band lead by the trombonist Ray Anderson in Piacenza on the 24th at Teatro President; and the poetic due of Javier Girotto with the accordion player Luciano Biondini in Solarolo (Ra) on the 29th at the Oratorio dell’Annunziata. On the 31st in Dozza (Bo) in the afternoon there will be the bandoneón concert of Carlo Maver (at the Enoteca Regionale of Emilia-Romagna) and a concert in the evening with Tiziana Ghiglioni in a duo with the guitar player Simone Massaron (at the Teatro Comunale).
A long series of concerts will also fill the month of April, when the following musicians will play: a double concert in Dozza ( Bo) on April 1 with the duo Vocione (with Marta Raviglia and Tony Cattano) and the duo with vocalist John De Leo and pianist Fabrizio Puglisi; Brazil will be represented by the voice and guitar of Guinga and Barbara Casini on stage in Russi (Ra) on the 3rd; Guinga will also host a seminar entitled “Mister Jazz” in Ravenna at Teatro Rasi on the 6th. The quartet of the saxophonist Lew Tabackin with the pianist Helen Sung will be in Ferrara at the Jazz Club on the 6th. Also worth noting is the three evening series “Massa Sonora” in Massa Lombarda (Ra), with a solo performance by the pianist Franco D’Andrea (on the 12th, preceded by a seminar in the afternoon), two groups from the musical world of the El Gallo Rojo scene, the Orchestra Vertical and the 4 Stories with Matt Renzi (on the 13th), and Hopscotch and Crisco 3, two trios lead by the saxophonist Francesco Bigoni (on the 14th). And let us not forget the pianist and the trumpet player Dino Rubino, who will play both a solo concert as well as in a trio with a project dedicated to Miriam Makeba in Modena on the 17th; the Unknown Rebel Band with the pianist Giovanni Guidi, a group which places the most prominent young Italian jazz artists alongside famous musicians (Rimini, on the 22nd); and Opus 5, a New York star, with the noteworthy trumpet player Alex Sipiagin (Ferrara, on the 24th).
A particular situation will be created in Correggio (Re): here some of the most important young talents on the Italian jazz scene will be the stars of "artists in residence", with a big final concert. The musicians involved will be the saxophonist Dan Kinzelman (in concert with the quartet Ghost, all wind instruments and percussion on April 30); the trombone player Gianluca Petrella (live with the Cosmic Band on May 12); the pianist Giovanni Guidi (with his New Quintet, on the 17th); the saxophonist Raffaele Casarano (with the group The Other Locomotive, on the 19th); and the trombone player Fulvio Sigurtà (with the Electric Alchemists on the 23rd).
