Tribute to Otis Redding

Rufus Thomas park

Porretta Terme (BO)

30 years of history and a general review of the different faces of the soul and rhythm and blues at the Porretta Soul Festival (20-23 July) which also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rufus Thomas, to whom Porretta dedicated a park. An unexpected return for Carla Thomas who exceptionally returns to the stage with her sister Vanees, backup and choir singer for Aretha Franklin.

Carla and Rufus Thomas were among the first artists to record at Stax in Memphis and duets with Otis Redding remain memorable. The program is packed with the funky Original James Brown Band, for a reunion that will see them back together, Fred Wesley, Martha High, the MC "The Capeman" Danny Ray, bassist Fred Thomas and many others.

For lovers of the Muscle Shoals sound directly from the Fame studios are the legendary Willie Hightower and Scott Sharrard, the Gregg Allman Band band leader. The Goldwax sound of Memphis is entrusted to veteran Wee Willie Walker and the current "Reigning Queen of Beale Street" Barbara Blue.

Also present Bernard "Pretty" Purdie , drummer of King Curtis, Aretha, Steely Dan, Dizzy Gillespie; Rob Paparozzi, front man of the Blues Brothers Band and Blood Sweat and Tears, Falisa Janaye, Sax Gordon & Toni Lynn Washington, King Louie & LaRhonda Steele but especially Vasti Jackson for a tribute to Johnnie Taylor who was band leader for at least twenty years. The house band is once again entrusted to Anthony Paule and to the best session musicians in the Bay Area. In four days in Porretta, there is also room for Australian Sweethearts, the Spanish Lucilles, the British Achievers and dozens of Italian rhythm & blues bands in the context of Street Soul Food which also includes exhibitions and DJ performances exclusively with "vintage" vinyls.
