New Year's Eve in Bologna

Piazza Maggiore

Bologna (BO)

Bologna celebrates New Year’s Eve in Piazza Maggiore with the traditional burning of the “Vecchione”, a huge "statue" created by local artists (this year, Petri Paselli) and representing the old year that has gone by. Following the music performance of Serge Pizzorno of Kasabian, from the balcony of Palazzo Re Enzo.

“Dallalto" (From Above) is the title of the show that will start at 10:30pm with the Indie rock dj-set of Len, dj of the famous Bronson Club of Madonna dell'Albero (Ravenna). Len will warm up the audience from the console of Palazzo Re Enzo and then, around midnight, give the stage over to Serge Pizzorno, guitarist and songwriter of Kasabian, the latest British band sensation.
The British artist will bring to the “Crescentone” (Piazza Maggiore square) all his skills with an eclectic mix of sounds. You will feel the great energy that has made this band from Leicester famous with its live performances.

At midnight, as a Bologna tradition, there will be the bonfire of the “Vecchione”, a huge kind of statue representing the old year, designed by PetriPaselli, the artistic duo formed by Luciano Paselli and Matteo Tommaso Petri. Since 2007 - when they won the Iceberg prize, Bologna's award for young artists - PetriPaselli have worked on photographic research projects sharing the passion for accumulation and de-contextualization of objects through artistic experimentation.
Being a temporary artwork, the “Vecchione” will be set up in Piazza Maggiore at the end of December and will live only a few days before being burned, symbolically closing the old year.

In addition, to start the year well, on January 1st from 12 to 8pm, you can visit the MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art of Bologna where the collection of the painter Giorgio Morandi has recently been moved from the Museo Morandi. At Mambo you can also see the art exhibition “Mario Ceroli, Face To Face” (opening December 20th 2012).

New Year's Eve celebration in Piazza Maggiore is organised by the Municipality of Bologna with the collaboration of Estragon.
