DELVAUX AND SURREALISM

An enigma among De Chirico, Magritte, Ernst, Man Ray

Fondazione Magnani Rocca - via Fondazione Magnani Rocca, 4 Mamiano
Mamiano di Traversetolo (PR)
A work by Delvaux
The new exhibition at the Fondazione Magnani Rocca features about 80 works by Paul Delvaux, divided by themes (The landscape, the railway enigma, the eternal feminine, Couples, Classicism, Skeletons).

The enigma, perfectly surreal, on the adhesion or not of this artist to the surrealism movement - he denied it, going against the apparent facts, defending himself as a "poetic realist" - is the theme of this exhibition which also offers a comparison with works by surrealists suh as Magritte, Max Ernst, Man Ray, and the great De Chirico. Delvaux partecipated with them in the “L’Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme” in 1938 in Paris, in one of the mat surprising artistic meetings of the 1900s, after having been deeply affected by the works he had seen at the exhibition “Minotaure”, held at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Bruxelles in 1934.

In the villa of masterpieces, beside famous works by Dürer, Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, Canova, Monet, Renoir, Morandi and many more, Delvaux's paintings find their fascinating place.

The exhibition, supported by Fondazione Cariparma and Cariparma Crédit Agricole, is completed with a full catalogue with texts by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle, Stefano Roffi, Laura Neve, Mauro Carrera, Elisa Barili, and Pierre Ghêne.
