SEGAVECCHIA

Traditional folklore festival

Town centre and various locations

Forlimpopoli (FC)

It is the oldest festival taking place in Forlimpopoli. Its origins are as old as history itself. There are documents that date the festival back to 1300, but some say the roots run even deeper, going back to ancient Celtic life-death-life rituals.

Today, the town celebrates with a parade of carnival floats and groups in fancy dress and, at the end of the celebrations, the representation of the "Vecchia" (hag) is broken, to punish her for all the ills of the year gone by, but the sweets and toys inside spill out for the joy of the children.

Date: the event will be held from Mar 24, 2019 to Mar 31, 2019

Event timetable: During the day

Programme:

One thing is certain, the Segavecchia is one of the events that from the beginning of time has made Forlimpopoli famous in Italy and around the world, a city best known for having given birth to Pellegrino Artusi, writer and gastronome, author of the first great cooking book written in the Italian language: "La Scienza in cucina e l'Arte di mangiar bene"

As per tradition, the floats and the “Vecchia” have been created with the usual skill in the long and cold winter nights by volunteers that have put all their art and their passion into the entire preparation.

La Segavecchia this year returns with more meetings, more fun opportunities for everyone to satisfy their tastes: from the amusement park to traditional stalls, from dried fruit to theater performances, from typical products to sport, from the fair to visits to the museum ...

On the two Sundays of the festival there are the traditional parades and challenges between masked floats, made on long and cold winter nights, with great skill and passion, by master float makers. On the second Sunday, first the Vecchia will be carried in the parade along with the allegorical floats through the streets of the village to be subjected to the mockery of many regrets while awaiting the final act, or the cutting open of the great puppet from which emerges a cascade of sweets and toys to the delight of all children.

Entrance: donations welcome
