Thanks to the full calendar of organized events, Salsomaggiore Terme attracts many bridge players. Since 1978 Salsomaggiore has hosted some of the most important Italian championship of bridge and for this it is very well-known by the players.

History of bridge
The “Contract Bridge” or, more simply “Bridge”, is a card game universally known and called everywhere in the same way.
It’s played by four people, in opposed pairs and, unlike the other games, in bridge the cards represent the necessary tool to develop the maneuvers.

The game of bridge boasts ancient roots and derives from the “Whist”, practised in England since the XVI century, but codified in specific rules, in 1742, by Sir Edmond Hoyle.

The intuition of Hoyle was to conceive a card game as a social vehicle with deep moral meanings. The game was individual and only in 1873, in Buyukdere, on the Bosphorus, was “Whistbridge” born, played like modern bridge.

In 1904 F. Roe invented “Auction bridge”, whose rules began to foresee the determination of the trumps through an auction between players and the game became immediately widespread in France and the United States.

In 1918, in France, “Plafond bridge” was invented, which slightly modifies the rules.

In 1925, thanks to the American Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, the rules of the “Contract Bridge”, practically those that are in force today, were sanctioned by an agreement among the Portland Club of London, the Whist Club of New York and the Commission Francaise de Bridge, the most authoritative and important organs about the game regulations and sports ethic.
