Traditional Bisò (mulled wine) prepared and served in the stands of the various districts
Old Town
The eve of the Epiphany is dedicated to the “Not de’ Bisò”, a festival that recalls the joy of the Palio del Niballo jousting tournament, which is held every year on the fourth Sunday of June.
The “Niballo”, effigy of Hannibal, the Saracen warrior and symbol of adversity, is burnt on a bonfire in Piazza del Popolo.
The “Niballo” is led to the Piazza del Popolo on an oxen cart. The district (rione) of the town which wins the Palio jousting tournament (in June) has the right to lead the oxen cart and light the bonfire.
At midnight the Niballo is set on fire by the representative of the rione while the crowd celebrates by drinking mulled wine from the typical majolica “gotti”. The “gotto” (majolical mug) specially created for the “Not de’ Bisò” is decorated by the ceramic maestri of Faenza with new decorations every year.
