Sustainable Nativity Scenes and Christmas Trees

Cattolica Aquarium - Piazza Delle Nazioni, 1/a

Cattolica (RN)

The traditional event “Underwater Nativities” will be enhanced by “Beached Nativities” and “Recycled Christmas trees”.

The leading cause for the Christmas holidays at the Aquarium is environmental sustainability to awaken public opinion on the theme of waste, such as of plastic, which reaches the sea and becomes dangerous for marine species.

This Christmas event is part of “PLASTIFINIAMOLA” (“Let's do away with plastic”), environmental educational activities organized by Cattolica Aquarium and the structures managed by Costa Parchi Edutainment Group.

Over the last few years, this project has involved children of all ages with their parents and teachers, in addition to artists and artisans against the use of plastic which endangers the sea so much.

Date: the event will be held from Dec 06, 2015 to Jan 06, 2016

Event timetable: During the month of December the Cattolica Aquarium is open on December 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 20th and from December 26th to January 6th from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. Last admission 2 hours before the closing time.

It was made by 500 children attending the nursery schools of Cattolica, with the support of their teachers and parents.
The project was begun thanks to a collaboration with Laboratorio di Educazione all'Immagine of Cattolica, an association which is engaged in educational and creative activities. The purpose is to reuse plastic materials to create objects, such as fish, jellyfish, starfish and octopi to decorate the big Christmas trees made by parents with driftwood. The project has the support of the Town Hall of Cattolica and the collaboration of HERA Group, the Company for environmental services that has collaborated with the Aquarium for many years to make new generations become more and more aware of environmental subjects. HERA also produced the necessary boards and provided all children with a very useful certificate that explains the good deeds they can do every day to help the environment.

Another Christmas project about waste and plastic is made with 4 “Beached Nativities” which can be seen at the “Plastifiniamola” exhibition. The project started last year in collaboration with Laboratorio di Educazione all'Immagine and the children in the last two primary school years of Cattolica. They have collected materials left on the beach after sea storms and used them to make Nativities, while focusing their attention on the reasons why plastic materials remain in the environment. Car tyres, plastic nets, boxes and bottles were mixed with clay, play dough and papier-mâché and transformed into original sculptures representing the Nativity.

The traditional Aquarium “Underwater Nativities” are on display for the 10th year running.
12 Italian artists and artisans made original sustainable Nativities with non-toxic eco-friendly materials like terracotta, blown glass and ceramics that are not dangerous for fish health.
The tanks of the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean become small underwater art galleries and unusual settings for precious deep water natural sculptures. This year's most impressive Nativity is made with faience tiles around a column in the large tank of the biggest sharks in Italy, where big Sand Tiger and Nurse Sharks swim in 700,000 litres of sea water.
