Spring Delights

At the ancient mid-Lent festival in Sant’Agata Feltria, a medieval town just inland from Rimini, March 11 to 18, many tasty things will be offered, from Romagna sweet breads, to "hard" bread from Le Marche, to Tuscan bread and Easter sweets from Ferrara. There will also be truffles for sale, both the famous “Bianchetto” or “Marzola” (Tuber Albidum), and the black spring truffle at very affordable prices.  This famous tuber can also be eaten at local restaurants which will offer particular dishes for the occasion.

sagradelizieprimavera.jpgFor those near Bologna, we recommend visiting the Raviola Festival, March 17 and 18. This ancient fair, dedicated to Saint Joseph, has been held for more than 200 years in Trebbo di Reno near Castel Maggiore.  Here the "Raviola" is celebrated, a sweet pastry filled with Bologna-style marmalade which used to be made in this area for the celebration of this Saint. In the food stands run by "Bon da gninta", visitors can taste typical home-cooked Bologna dishes: tortellini, tagliatelle al ragù, sausage, cutlets and the famous "crescentine" with cold cuts.

Along the Romagna coast, Cervia and Pinarella traditionally celebrate Saint Joseph's with the "focarina", a big bonfire on the beach and the Cuttlefish FestivalOn March 18 and from 21-25 visitors can taste this seafood cooked in foil and eat many other seafood dishes, such as cuttlefish with tomato sauce, at the big food stand set up for the occasion in Pinarella; there will also be entertainment every evening with traditional Romagna shows.
