The “Slaughter” of the pig
The slaughtering of pigs in Romagna was done every January, in the dead of winter, and was cause for celebration for everyone who participated in this event and for the farmers who reaped the rewards of all of their hard work.
The two festivals dedicated to pork that we have chosen for you, called “bagoin” in dialect, reenact the butchering methods which date back to ancient farming traditions and are a great opportunity to taste local dishes and participate in all the fun events of these festivals.
At the foot of this lovely little medieval town just inland from Rimini in the heart of the Malatesta lands, Villa Verucchio will celebrate the "slaughtering" of the pig with the Fira de Bagòin (Pig Fair), on January 15. All day long, sausage, ribs, liver, "cotechini" and cracklings will be prepared.
There will also be folk dances and popular music to entertain visitors.
The second event will be held in honor of the festival of Sant’Antonio Abate and will take place in San Mauro Pascoli on the coast of Romagna. This festival offers a classic traditional farming event, the Festa de Bagòin ma la Tòra (Pig Party at Villa Torlonia). Here the pork will be cut using old traditions by professional experts, sold or served grilled all weekend on January 21 and 22.
And of course there will be songs and popular dances and the religious celebrations in honor of Sant’Antonio.
