Grape and wine festivals in Emilia Romagna

The summer season is fading into autumn, the air is cooling off and the fields are home to grape harvesting.  From the land to the table is just a short walk.  And so it is that the historic towns, near the production locations of some of the best wines in Emilia Romagna, become tinged with wine thanks to the tasty festivals in honor of grapes.

Predappio (Fc) rhymes with Sangiovese which, besides at “Three Days of Sangiovese”, on September 4, 5 and 6, will also be the star when September 1, 2, 3 offer a preview of the main event.  Wine will be served in tastings together with typical local products from local cheese makers and farms, along with films, exhibitions, musical entertainment, concerts and special dinners.

A tour to discover the wines of Val Tidone will be offered by the four towns of this Piacenza valley - Borgonovo Val Tidone, Ziano, Nibbiano, Pianello - with a focus on the local wine and food tradition with the help of expert sommelier guides.  At the 6th edition of the “Valtidone Wine Fest” there will be many cultural events and shows that will accompany the tastings of ortrugo, gutturnio, malvasia and passiti. Chefs will perform exciting cooking demonstrations, guided tours will help visitors get to know the traditions and history of Val Tidone, delicious dinners will present traditional Piacenza dishes, and everything will be concluded with an amazing fireworks show that will be visible from the hills.  September 3, 5, 6, 12-13, 19-20, 26-27.

The smell of wine will also be wafting through Monte San Pietro (Bo) which, for the occasion of the 47th festival, together with the D.O.C. wines of the Bologna hills, will offer local products at the food stands set up at the wineries.  Enthusiasts can meet local producers and get to know and taste Bacchus's precious drink.  The two evenings will be enlivened by the musical show Dallabanda and by the show by Duilio Pizzocchi.  September 5-6.

The festival continues at the “Provincial Grape Fair” in Riolo Terme, just inland from Ravenna, with free tastings, plentiful food stands, markets with local products, music and comedy shows.  Saturday night everyone will look to the skies to admire the incredible fireworks show.  Sunday will be dedicated to games and prizes, entertainment, and shows.  September 17-20.

Wine is not just a drink, but also a food.  And so a visit to the special "Festa dei sughi" in Mascarino di Castello d'Argile (Bo) is a must for those who want to delight their palates with the "sugo", made by boiling grape must with flour and sugar until it becomes a type of pudding, to be eaten with a spoon.  September 17-20.

The “Grape Festival” in Castenaso, in the Bologna plains, turns sixty this year.  To celebrate the arrival of fall and its bounty, there will be many events on schedule, including musical shows, theater performances, sports tournaments, and street markets.  To get to the stands, dispersed throughout the town, visitors can ride a little train around.  On Friday and Saturday there will be the magical atmosphere of the "White Nights" with their aperitifs, tastings and food late into the night.  September 18-21.

The historic center of Castellarano, on the Reggio Emilia hills with its lovely city walls, the well-maintained 15th century fortress and the crenelated castle, will pay homage to the grape and its byproducts with an entire weekend of music and dancing, medieval markets and old games, street and craft markets, special menus and demonstrations of ancient crafts.  For kids, there will also be a little market and a play space.  The medieval dinner and historic parade will take visitors back to the ancient splendors of this era.  September 18-20.

Completely dedicated to Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro DOC this festival will be held right in the Castelvetro area, near Modena, known for its agriculture.  In the two weekends on September 19-20 and 26-27 concerts, exhibitions, markets, and entertainment for adults and children will accompany the food stands selling local dishes.  At the end of the festival there will be the traditional parade of Bacchus Floats.

Another gourmet event awaits in San Giovanni in Marignano (Rn), with the “New Year's of Wine”.  The town will be the star of an event created especially to welcome the new wine, a party in honor of the main product of this area, the result of years of tradition.  At the "Palio della Pigiatura" the town "contrade", each one represented by a man and a woman, will face off in a grape stomping competition to win the Palio di Marignano.  This is a unique occasion that recalls the parties in farmyards when the community celebrated the good moments of farming life, in particular a good grape harvest.  September 26-27.
