Bologna Ferrara Romagna - Parks lead to parks

Bridle path of two seas

This bridle path connects two seas and two regions.  In fact, it connects Emilia Romagna with Tuscany along two parks: that of the Po Delta (Ferrara-Ravenna) and the Uccellina Park (Grosseto), crossing through the Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona, Campigna.  In the Romagna part of the Apennines, it goes along the old street that connected Florence with Castrocaro-Terra del Sole (once part of Tuscany).  Presumably, it was the same route that Dante took from Florence when he was exiled to his second home, Ravenna where today there is his tomb.  A strange fact: some towns that you pass by along the way are mentioned in the Divine Comedy.

Horse trails - Romagna Ferrara Bologna - Water ways

From Lido delle Nazioni to Comacchio: 26 km (1 day)
This is an itinerary totally along the plains, of great beauty in the midst of brackish and freshwater wetlands.  The landscape is made up of sand, Mediterranean vegetation, poplars and swamps.  The birds here are amazing from the crested heron to the pink flamingo and the cormorant.  Comacchio is splendid (it’s known as the little Venice) with its bridges and canals.  Famous for the breeding (and eating!) of eels.  The Museum of the Wetlands should be visited.

From Comacchio to S.Alberto: 18 (1 day about)
A route for everyone, on the plains.  You go along the famous Comacchio Wetlands.  It is a mirror of 10,000 hectares of water, through dunes and banks.  It is here that fishermen (also there old shacks should be seen) raise eels.  There is the also the typical crossing of the Reno by ferry (there is also a bridge).

From S.Alberto to Porto Corsini: 16 km (1/2 day)
This itinerary covers the other part of the Comacchio Wetlands and arrives in Bertuzzi Valley.  We are, once again, in one of the most beautiful wetland areas in Italy, a great oasis very well protected.  Here you can also see the old salt mines and the Spina necropolis.

From Porto Corsini to Bagnacavallo: 2 km (1 day)
With this route, you leave behind Bertuzzi valley and follow the banks of the river Lamone.  There are no particularly difficult parts, the itinerary is on the plains.  Bagnacavallo is a very nice little town with a medieval layout and a nice atmosphere.  You should see the evocative Piazza Nuova and the proto-Romanesque parish church of San Pietro in Silvis.

From Bagnacavallo to Faenza: 22/25 km (1 day)
The whole route is on the plains and riverbanks: it’s enough just to follow the river Lamone.  Faenza, a beautiful renaissance city, is famous for its ceramics.  A tradition that dates back to the 1300s and that has never been interrupted: there are still 60 bodega in the city and the important International Museum of Ceramics.

From Faenza to Catrocaro-Terra del Sole: 12/15 km (1/2 day)
You start out at the Centro Civico Rioni in Faenza.  From here you continue on towards Modigliana, along the river Marzeno and towards the equestrian center “Amico Cavallo”.  You ride until the farm holiday Laghetto del Sole.  Then the route goes through Santa Lucia – Monte Poggiolo and ends in Morticino.

From Castrocaro to Rocca San Casciano: 22 km (1 day)
Beautiful but difficult.  This route starts out immediately going uphill and climbs into the Apennines in the middle of the woods.  Once at Rocca San Casciano, on the ridge, you can decide either to digress to Modigliana (you can stop at the equestrian center Lieto or the farm holiday Abeto).  After getting refreshed, you can get back on the trail to Portico di Romagna.

From Rocca San Casciano to Portico di Romagna: 14 km (1/2 day)
Also this route runs along the ridge and is therefore suited to expert riders.  The landscape is typical of the Apennines and woodsy.  A strange thing in this area is the so-called “Little Volcanoes”, just above Portico di Romagna.  It is a geologic phenomenon: gaseous emissions that burn continually (it is along the route that connects with Modigliana).

From Portico di Romagna to San Benedetto in Alpe: 20 km (1 day)
A way to spend an intense day, even if it is a little difficult, given that it goes through the Apennines and is inside the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, , Monte Falterone and Campigna.  All around you can see firs, streams and waterfalls.  This particular segment is in the area of the Muraglione Pass on horseback between Romagna and Tuscany.  The Acquacheta Waterfalls should not be missed.

From San Benedetto in Alpe to Campigna: 14/22 km (1 day)
This one is inside the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna.  The park stretches out over 36,000 hectares along the ridge between Romagna and Tuscany: more than 18,000 hectares are in Romagna.  Such illustrious poets as Dante and Ariosto wrote about these landscapes.  The fauna of the park is probably the most diversified of all of the northern Apennines: wolves, wild boars, deer, fallow deer, roe deer, dormice, squirrels and field mice with a yellow neck.  To reach the lodge there are two options: or directly on the Forest Road or by way of Premilcuore.
