Bologna, Ferrara, Romagna - The salt ways

Romagna and Tuscany

For those that would like to experience something new, here is the real route of the salt smugglers.  On horseback, you can go along the old roads used to smuggle salt going, tobacco coming back.  The itineraries all start out at the sea or at the Saline mines or from the Pinewood of Ravenna (near Milano Marittima).  The routes wind through the heart of the Po Delta Park.  And everyone ends up at the Passatori equestrian center.

Horse trails - Romagna Ferrara Bologna - Water ways

From the sea (Lido di Dante or Savio di Ravenna) to Cesena: 26 km (1 day)
Route along the plains.  From Lido di Dante, you go along the sea (headed south) next to the Pinewood.  In the Delta Park, you can go along the route only if you are accompanied by the guides from the equestrian center.  Under any other circumstance it is forbidden to enter the Pinewood.  Cross over the river Bevano and you arrive at the farm holiday Valentini.  From here you go along the river Savio up to Mensa Matellica.  Then it’s on to the gates of Cesena.  Now you must cross the underpass under the E45 highway, the highway exit Cesena Nord, in the industrial zone of Pieve Sestina.  Only if you know the route very well is it possible to get around easily in the industrial area (but if you need help, just call the closest equestrian center).  This is how you can reach the equestrian center I Passatori.

From Cesena to Cusercoli: 22 km (1 day about)
From the equestrian center, go towards Bertinoro, Tessello, Teodorano.  This route passes by vineyards that have made this area of the Road of Wines and Tastes famous.  From Teodorano, the landscape becomes sparser.  Continue on to Pian di Spino, then take the dirt road that runs along the river Voltre, crossing it several times, among the gypsum bights.  This area is very beautiful: there used to be sulphur mines here.  In Voltre, there are two restaurants that specialize in mushrooms and truffles.  Then it’s on to the farm holiday Cusercoli Ca’ Bionda (managed by the Faggioli Farms).  Sidenote: from Ca’ Bionda it is possible to go down to Castrocaro, following the Path of the Alpine Troops up to the Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falerona, Campigna, or continuing in the direction of Bagno di Romagna along the Spanish Broom Route.

From Cusercoli to Galeata: 16 km (1/2 day about)
Route along a ridge.  There are two ways to take this route.  In this itinerary, we have chosen the Path of the Alpine Troops.  This path begins at the Caminate Fortress.  The ridge route (between the rivers Bidente and Rabbi) is marked well enough.  A map is also available for purchase 1/30.000 “Val Bidente-Val Rabbi-Trek".  You can follow it, going up towards the west.  Then you can follow the signs for Sant’Ellero.  You pass in front of the ancient monastery of Sant’Ellero, and then it’s down to Galeata (farm holiday Pettola).

From Galeata to Corniolo: 26 km (1 day)
Here is a route for well trained horses and riders.  This one is all along a ridge and uphill.  And there are two or three places where you must walk and they are quite difficult.  We are in the heart of the Apennines, in the middle of completely untouched nature.  You can ride in the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona, Campigna.  If you are lucky, you can see a wolf in the distance.  It is more likely you’ll see a wild boar, roe deer or fallow deer, or a squirrel.

From Corniolo to the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona, Campigna: 18 km (1 day)
This route is at a much higher altitude than the last one (it goes up to 1500 m).  So there are a lot of difficult passages (on foot, uphill) and maybe not so suited to those who suffer from a fear of heights.  However, the place and the surrounding landscapes, in the heart of the National Park, make it very worthwhile.
