Finale Emilia
Province:
Modena (42 km)
Tourist Area
Situated at the very eastern edge of the Province of Modena, Finale Emilia was fortified by the father of Matilde di Canossa, who built the maschio of the castle, in the medieval period.
From the 13th century it always followed the destiny of Modena for which it was “Most Faithful Finale”. The Estense Fortress is imposing and its quadrilateral structure, fortified with towers on which the Estense eagle and the maschio are featured, encloses the courtyard with a triple gallery.
Two other great buildings typify Finale: The Municipal Palace with its clock and statue of San Zenone and the Church of San Bartolomeo.
The earthquake of May 2012 has detroyed almost completly part of the historic town center. The Este fortress was seriously damaged, as were many ancient churches.
