Where it is
Fiorano Modenese and its hamlets Spezzano, Nirano, and Ubersetto are 17 km from Modena; this town is located at the foot of the hills and is part of the ceramic district.
Why visit
Fiorano joins its former beauty with modern industrialization and urban expansion, which haven't erased the typical characteristics of a small provincial town, the pleasure of a climate mitigated by the hills and the trace of tradition that can be discovered in the way of life of its inhabitants.
Where to visit and what to see
In every time of the year Fiorano will entertain you with pleasant and interesting events, linked to culture, art, tradition and gastronomy.

The minor basilica Santuario della Beata Vergine del Castello, an excellent example of baroque, is in the center of town and houses a fresco representing the Madonna, once located in the old castle which was destroyed in 1558 by a fire.

In 1634, after the terrible plague of 1630, the citizens began the construction of the sanctuary to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for saving the city from the disease.

The castle of Spezzano
is not far from Fiorano, inside it you can admire 16th century frescoes, pictorial series, and coffered ceilings. The “Museum of Pottery” is set up in the rooms of the castle and is a testimony to the history of ceramic production from prehistory to the present day. The pentagonal tower houses a set of barrels for the production of balsamic vinegar.

The parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Spezzano houses Ciro Menotti's tomb, the famous patriot of the Risorgimento.
Don't miss
The natural park “Riserva naturale delle Salse di Nirano”, is characterized by a geological phenomenon: mud volcanoes, made up of cold, clayey mud gushing out of the soil together with hydrocarbons. As the mud dries, it takes the shape of a volcanic cone.
On the table
Passed down from generation to generation, a lot of families own sets of barrels for producing balsamic vinegar. In this area you can also taste other products, typical of the local food tradition, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, various kinds of cold meat, local fruits and vegetables. All this can be eaten while you sip a good glass of Lambrusco wine. At the end of the meal you can taste a piece of bensone (a handmade cake) together with milk or wine!
Main events
May is a month full of events: every year during the “Maggio fioranese” a lot of activities take place.
On August 16th the fair of San Rocco is held in Spezzano. On September 8th Fiorano celebrates its patron, the blessed Virgin.

In September, the castle of Spezzano becomes the star of an important music festival, MaF Musica a Fiorano. In October one of the festivals dedicated to Balsamic Vinegar, “Castello Balsamico”, is housed in the castle.
