Where it is
Porretta Terme is located on the boarder of the Province of Pistoia on the edge of the Bologna Apennines. The highest peak in the area is Mount Piella, at about 1500 m.
This little town is also a famous spa destination, renowned for its spring waters which contain sulfur, sodium chloride, bromide and iodide, and which have been famous since the Roman Empire. It is the perfect starting place for nature hikes in the greenery of the surrounding hills and mountains.
Where to visit and what to see
Every season is full of interesting things to do, but we feel we should recommend spring and autumn most of all because in these seasons it is possible, in a relaxed setting, to go on regenerating walks on the more than 700 km of paths, maintained by the Alto Reno CAI.
This town offers many historic monuments, including the splendid church of Santa Maria Maddalena (Mary Magdalene), as well as cultural events hosted by its local library archives and museums, which make it possible to combine spa wellness with cultural interests.
There are also some historic remains in the area regarding the existence and ancient use of the springs here, such as the large mask representing a lion, which has since become the symbol of Porretta Terme, which dates back to the Roman era (1st century BC).
You cannot leave Porretta Terme without having visited the Castelluccio Castle (6 km) with its fairy tale museum and the splendid 18th century sanctuary of the Madonna del Faggio (10 km).
On the table
There are numerous local specialties, from typical Bologna dishes to poor mountain recipes: focaccia, “zampanelle”, and “necci” made with chestnut flour. You can also taste the local Beltaine beer made from chestnuts. Don’t miss the local sweets: the Little Cake of Porretta and the mountain candies.
Porretta is home to a series of avant-garde sports centers: the Olympic-sized swimming pool – the only structure of this size from Pistoia to Sasso Marconi – tennis courts, football fields, and gyms frequently used by the national football, basketball and volleyball teams for team meetings.
To keep fit
With its many wellness centers and the events in connection with its precious spring waters, Porretta Terme
is the ideal place to keep in shape.
In the third week of July, the “Porretta Soul Festival” is held, a festival of international music dedicated to soul music. In the first week of December, there is the “Porretta Cinema Film Festival” which hosts many independent film stars.
Nearby is the regional Corno alle Scale Park (30 km). This area is very well-known for its important ski resort and its pristine, extremely beautiful nature.
