Blue Flag Recognition 2012

Blue Flag

The Romagna Riviera is once again the star in this edition of the Blue Flag awards, which are not given just for clean water, but also for the eco-sustainable services available for tourists. This flag is synonymous with clean water, but it also represents ecological services, such as recycling or bike paths, which are available to everyone.

The Blue Flag is an international recognition, begun in 1987, which is awarded every year by the Foundation for Environmental Education-FEE in numerous countries, at first only in Europe but now also in other countries outside of Europe. In addition to the 8 Flags 2010, this year there is also Misano Adriatico, a new entry.

Here are all of the places recognized:
- Province of Ferrara

Lidi di Comacchio: Lido degli Estensi, Lido degli Sacchi, Lido delle Nazioni, Lido di Pomposa, Lido di Spina and Lido di Volano.
- Province of Ravenna

Lidi Ravennati: Lido Adriano, Lido di Classe, Lido di Dante e Lido di Savio; Lidi Cervesi: Cervia, Milano Marittima and Pinarella.
- Province of Forlì-Cesena

Cesenatico and San Mauro Mare.
- Province of Rimini

Bellaria Igea Marina, Cattolica and Misano Adriatico, the new entry.

Furthermore, all of the 96 beaches of the Emila-Romagna coast obtained the blue flag which represents the high quality of the water, based on microbiological parameters established by the bathing community bathing directive. From Lido di Volano to Cattolica, tourists can be sure that they are swimming in safe water without any organic contaminants such as e.coli and intestinal enterococchi.

All of the data on the marine waters along the coast can be found online, along with a simple explanation on the new site relating to the swimming areas. The website is also in English and was created by Arpa and the Sanitary Services of the Region.

During the season is the possibility to check the water quality in these areas each day, just by using the interactive map where all of the seaside towns along the coast can been seen and clicked on. The water classifications are as follows: excellent bathing water, compliant bathing water, water with environmental problem, non- compliant bathing water. There are also the test results and the environmental characteristics of each area.

The website also posts alerts in real time of any inconvenience that could compromise the quality of swimming waters in an area.
