In Emilia Romagna autumn rhymes with food and wine!

 

The weather cools off and creates the best atmosphere for selling and buying the products of the land or for gathering around local traditional foods, prepared following recipes passed down from generation to generation in which the ingredients are obtained thanks to the care of capable farmers, breeders and growers of our lands, well known around the world as the fertile mother of good food and good wine.

 

Among the most celebrated fairs of this season stands the famous Eel Fair. Where else would you enjoy this dish if not in the “little Venice” of Emilia Romagna called Comacchio? Among bridges and canals, colorful houses, typical little restaurants and the smell of fresh fish, let yourself be carried away by the demonstrations of ancient crafts such as marsh fishing or spit cooking inside the historic fires of the Manifattura dei Marinati, from boat rides along the town canals – where you can try steering a “batana”, the typical boat of Comacchio – to the cooking lessons and guided tastings of the “sandy creatures”. October 14-15.

 

 

All the fruits of autumn will delight us in Bentivoglio (Bo) at the Festival of Zero Km - Open Day of Taste. Here the tastings of food, expo of local products, reenactments of peasant traditions and food workshops will be held in the setting of the Museum of Farming Culture. Given the recent inauguration of the “Atelier Tessile” (the weaving studio), many events will be held to discover ancient crafts such as yarn making, weaving, and natural dyeing of threads and fabrics. October 22.

 

If we point our compass towards the delights of the underbrush, Emilia Romagna will lead the way.

 

Every Sunday in October the place to be is Sant'Agata Feltria (Rn) with the National Fair of the Prized White Truffle, now in its 33rd edition and held in a medieval town that boasts the recognition of being a "Truffle City". Along the town streets you will find the prized tuber along with all the autumn products that this generous Apennine land offers: mushrooms, chestnuts, honey, herbs, dairy and agricultural products and even rural and artistic crafts. October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29.

 

On the third and fourth Sunday of October also Dovadola (Fc) will pay homage to truffles with the 51st Truffle Fair and Festival . The volunteer “sfogline” pasta makers will be working to roll out pasta with rolling pins, making 2000 eggs worth of tagliatelle, served with more than 300 kilos of meat ragù with the addition, of course, of truffles. But not only: polenta, bruschetta, eggs, truffle “panzerotti” and piadina with cold cuts, sausage, roasted meat, fried piadina, chips and Romagna wines will offer an explosion of smells and tastes. October 15 and 22.


The most beautiful examples of mushrooms and truffles will be awarded prizes in Pecorara, near Piacenza, during the Provincial festival of truffles and underbrush products. It will also be the chance to see the awards given to the truffle dogs, as well as traditional folk dances. During the Pecorara TartuFOUR four people will face off in a competition to create the best street food using truffles. But if you want to enjoy an entire menu without being in a rush, there will be many dishes served in the restaurants of the town that will be more than satisfying. October 15.


In Casola Valsenio (Ra) the Forgotten Fruits and Chestnut Festival will allow you to discover forgotten ancient flavors, autumn products and those fruits that over time have fallen out of use. The program includes competitions for the tastiest jam and chestnut dessert, one for the most beautiful stand and a photography competition, too.
A bountiful food stand and starred chefs will offer autumn specialties and for the entire autumn season the restaurants will offer "cooking with forgotten fruits", dishes using these delights. There will also be the display and sale of ancient fruit plants, for beautifying parks and gardens. The Arboretum of forgotten fruits of the Herb Garden “A. Rinaldi Ceroni” offers cultural and material knowledge of about 400 herbal plants. October 7-8, 14-15.

 


Chestnuts will be the stars also in Montefiore Conca (Rn). For the 53rd edition, cooked and raw chestnuts as well as smoking roasted ones will reign at the stands downtown. At the market of farm and food products you will find the best that this area has to offer, as well as music, shows, food stands, and guided tours. October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29.

 

From chestnut to chestnut our path takes us to the Apennines near Modena, among the peaks of Montecreto. At the chestnut fair there will be many different "chestnut flavors" to be enjoyed at the food stands, and there will also be local specialties, entertainment, and curiosities all weekend. October 28-29.


Until the last Sunday of October also Castel del Rio (Bo) will offer chestnuts in all their forms at the chestnut fair. Here you can taste the best specialties of this autumn fruit such as “castagnaccio”, polenta made with chestnut flour, “bruciati”, “capaltaz”, “frittelle”and chestnut truffles, chestnut liquor, jams and various sweets made with chestnuts or chestnut flour. October 15, 22, 29.

 


Changing taste and food, we move on to Albinea (Re), where the Autumn Festival pays tribute to the Balsamic Cracklings. The most highly anticipated event is the "Crackling Palio" now in its 9th edition where more than 30 pork butchers will face off in the production of this ancient, typically Emilian, product. But space and recipes are abundant here and you can also find autumn fruits and typical local products such as chestnuts, mushrooms, traditional sweets, but also fried dough and “erbazzone”, a kind of quiche, cakes and mulled wine, grape must liquor, cappelletti and grape sauce. Besides the market of artists and the folk shows, you can also take part in educational demos of ancient traditions.


Workshops, sculptures, original combinations and all the best that chocolate has to give not only for your palate but also for your eyes will also be at the Cioccoshow in Bologna November 17-19.
