The end of summer food and wine events in Emilia Romagna 2017

In Emilia Romagna the month of September rhymes with food and wine!


The weather cools off and creates the best atmosphere for selling and buying the products of the land or for gathering around local traditional foods, prepared following recipes passed down from generation to generation in which the ingredients are obtained thanks to the care of capable farmers, breeders and growers of our lands, well known around the world as the fertile mother of good food and good wine.


Until September 10 Parma will give us its most important festival dedicated to Prosciutto di Parma. The special part of this event is that it allows visitors to tour the production plants and discover live how this product is made. The entire week is full of meetings dedicated to food, workshops, guided tastings, cocktails with music, special surprise guests and shows.



Not far from Piacenza, every Sunday in September the Valtidone Wine Fest will guide you along a route including Borgonovo Val Tidone, Ziano, Nibbiano and Pianello to discover the wines of Val Tidone. Here you can wander around the center of these lovely towns in the valley with your glass which will be given to you at the entrance of the Fest.

The best local Piacenza food will be paired with wines that exalt their smell, color and taste. September 3, 10, 17, 24.


On the same Sundays, the Castle of Gropparello (Pc) will be the star of the Grape Festival. Tastings of local DOC wines for adults and grape stomping for kids will be held inside a very suggestive setting with a panorama that looks out of their rolling vineyards of the Val Vezzeno.


In Cervia the age-old tradition of salt storing is reenacted in September, the final month of a season of hard work for the salt pan families who, after the reenactment of the storage, called “armesa de sel” in the local dialect, still have a great celebration of people even today. Every year from the ancient “burchiella,” the traditional boat used to transport salt, about 10000 tons of salt are unloaded with the help of ancient instruments. The salt is then, instead of being stored as in the past, distributed to those present at the event. September 7-10.


Also during the weekend of September 10 the smell of good food will take you also to Castel San Pietro Terme (Bo) where, together with the hand pushed car race, there will be tastings of mutton in all of its local versions. In Sasso Morelli di Imola you can instead walk amongst the food stands of the whole town and do the pork butchery workshops with the cooking school.


The Piadina Festival will be held in Bellaria Igea Marina, where the route of flavors, with unusual and decidedly alternative pairings, is accompanied by musical events in the osteria, competitions among pasta makers to win the prized trophy of the best piada of the year, osteria, local products, crafts, music and shows.



Flavors from beyond the Alps will come to Santarcangelo di Romagna, and at the “Bavaria Festival” Romagna meets Bavaria. Typical dishes such as pork shanks, hot dogs, grilled meat, sauerkraut, and pretzels will accompany beers such as the exclusive Paulaner, all of which can be enjoyed along with music, singing and dancing in the company of the Gibierfest Band. September 7-10.

If what makes our stomach growl is instead underground products, here the range of events is truly vast.


Do not miss the National Fair of the Porcini of Albareto, from September 8 to 10, where the best food and wine stands gather and where you can see cooking demos with nationally famous bloggers and chefs and there will be conventions, exhibitions, and entertainment for the whole family. Besides the street food, inside a big restaurant there will be menus served with dishes using the prized Porcini mushroom, which can be accompanied by artisanal beer or local wines. And for having some fun there is an amusement park as well.


The porcini mushroom will also be the star in Sant’Annapelago and Pievepelago, in the Apennines near Modena. Here, besides the food and product stands, tastings and music, there will also be a competition for the heaviest mushroom. Among the special meetings on schedule is “Shiitake mushroom of health from the Orient to the Apennines”, a therapeutic mushroom of eastern medicine grown right here in the Apennines, and the tasting “From mushrooms to beer” with the participation of the master beer-maker of the White Dog brewery. September 16-17.


In San Giorgio Piacentino the mushroom festival continues with good food and loads of music. Fifteen pairs of expert mushroom gathers from as many municipalities around Piacenza will face off in the Palio del fungaiolo. Whoever finds the biggest mushroom, or who presents the most beautiful arrangement of mushrooms, wins. September 15-17.

For those who love “black gold and white gold” the place to be is Castel del Rio (Bo). The Truffle Festival will celebrate this prized product with music, dancing, shows for adults and children and truffle hunting demonstrations. September 16-17.


A great combination of undergrowth products can be had in Novafeltria, just inland from Rimini, where polenta will be prepared in mass quantities. Every Sunday at the31st Festival of Polenta and Undergrowth Productsthe best and most traditional local recipes will be prepared, a real joy not just for the palate but also for the eyes. September 17, 24 and October 1.

Making a bridge with the month of October is the famous Eel Fair. Where else would you enjoy this dish if not in the “little Venice” of Emilia Romagna called Comacchio? Among bridges and canals, colorful houses, typical little restaurants and the smell of fresh fish, let yourself be carried away by the demonstrations of ancient crafts such as marsh fishing or spit cooking inside the historic fires of the Manifattura dei Marinati, from boat rides along the town canals – where you can try steering a “batana”, the typical boat of Comacchio – to the cooking lessons and guided tastings of the “sandy creatures”. September 30 – October 1, October 7-8, 14-15.
