The autumn season has come and along with it the smells and flavors at the table change. Products that grow in the underbrush pop up, such as mushrooms and truffles, which in the kitchen can be used to make tasty recipes while in the areas where they grow they will become the subject of many fairs and festivals, which in turn become happy meeting places for enthusiasts, professionals or those who just love to eat good food!



One of the most traditional dates in the Apennines is the one with the “Tartufesta 2015”, the classic fair that wanders through the flavors of the Bolognese hills, which will be held every weekend in October and November until Sunday, November 15. This event, which every year welcomes thousands of visitors from all over Italy, makes it possible to get to know the lands and food traditions of Emilia. Also this year there will be many "TartuLibri", "TartuMenù" and "TartuMercati" (truffle books, menus and markets) and of course the "TartuVisite", guided excursions in the woods to look for mushrooms and truffles and to explore the local towns. There will also be "TartuEventi", including informative meetings and tastings held by local producers, mycological and photograph exhibitions, food stands, truffle dog competitions, conventions and themed meetings.


Every Sunday in October there will also be the "National Prized White Truffle Fair" in Sant'Agata Feltria, in the province of Rimini, where you can find, besides the sought after tuber, also other autumn products that this Apennine area has to offer such as mushrooms, chestnuts, honey, herbs, pasteurized products and vegetables. The town will be dotted with food stands, craft markets, vineyard stands, exhibitions and shows. The truffle dog competition will allow visitors to witness the exciting moment of searching for truffles in the company your loyal dogs. October 4, 11, 18, 25.


The "49th Truffle Fair" will be held on the last two Sundays of October.  Gathered on the green hills around the town of Dovadola, near Forlí, truffles of every size can be found at the market stands around town as well as other typical autumn products.  Downtown, the "sfogline", women who volunteer to hand-make pasta, will be at work with their rolling pins to roll out pasta made with 2000 eggs and served with more than 300 kilograms of meat sauce and, of course, truffles.  October 18 and 25.


Every Sunday from mid October to mid November in Calestano, near Parma, you can discover how good the black truffle of Fragno is at the national fair in its honor.  You can take part in guided visits of the truffle areas, delight you palate with the dishes served at the food stands of "Strada del Prosciutto e dei vini dei Colli", have a great themed lunch in the local restaurants, and walk among the market stands along the streets of the town.  Among the most highly anticipated events are: the trophy for the biggest truffle (Sunday, November 15) and the National Competition of Truffle Dogs (Sunday, November 8).  October 11, 17-18, 25 and November 1, 8, 15.


The month of November also awaits you in the medieval town of Cusercoli near Civitella di Romagna, not far from Forlì, when the prized white truffle of the Bidente Valley reaches its peak.  Besides the many delights for your palate, for truffle gatherers there are many awards to be won and the exciting Italian Championship Final for truffle dogs.  This festival is also a good chance to visit the castle with a guide and admire the exhibition of Suiseki. November 8 to 15.


In the month of November, there will be the 9th edition of the "Autumn Truffle Fair - Tuber Magnatum Pico" in Sant'Agostino, near Ferrara.  The white truffle can be found in abundance in the Panfilia Woods and is coveted by chefs around the world.  At this fair the most traditional dishes of this area will be served.  For those who would like to pair good food with spending time outdoors, there will be guided hikes in the woods led by special guides such as local truffle hunters, experts on these woods and the high quality white truffle.  November 6-8, 13-15, 20-22.


Mondaino (Rn) will also celebrate truffles along with fossa cheese and seasonal fruits with the fair "Fossa, Truffles and Venus". Fossa cheese has been produced for centuries in the pits of the castle of Mondaino and, along with black and white truffles, it is a prized product of this area in the Rimini hills.  This event is a great opportunity to wander among the various stands, visit the market of food products, eat at the food stands, the restaurants and "agriturismo", and to get to know the craftsmen of Mondaino and visit the Paleontology Museum.  November 15 and 22.


Mushrooms and truffles are also among the delights that can be found at the "29th olive and autumn products fair" in Coriano, a town just inland from Rimini in the valley of the Conca river, known for the quality if its extra-virgin olive oil and for its many presses that can be visited.  The oil and other products will be offered in abundance along with Romagna wines, honey and its derivatives, cheeses, natural and macrobiotic products, fruit, plants, flowers, and even crafts, garden tools and sports equipment.  There will also be themed exhibitions, demonstrations of ancient Romagna crafts, conventions and tastings to round out this great autumn festival.  November 15 and 22.


In the medieval town of Brisighella (Ra), ranked among the “Most Beautiful Towns in Italy", "His Majesty the Truffle", accompanied by other autumn products, will be paired with typical traditional dishes prepared by skilled chefs in the local restaurants and at the food stands.  November 22.
