Reggio Emilia. The melting of bells
Province of Reggio Emilia

A typical handicraft in Castelnovo né Monti is the very ancient art of melting bells, handed down from generation to generation.
The Capanni family, in particular, has played an important role in developing and improving production techniques that are based on the shaping and melting of bells, updating technologies and acquiring national and international success. In the company it is possible to find miniatures of perfectly functioning bells.
That is why, after some centuries, it is possible to enjoy concerts of bells built by the masters from Castelnovo in the most important churches and monasteries in the North of Italy and in Tuscany.
It is worth mentioning the “Baiòn” in the Cathedral of Parma, the seventeen bells of the concert in the Benedictine monastery in San Giovanni di Parma and the famous “Maria Dolens”, a very big bell with a weight of 255 quintals, that has commemorated, since 1965, the fallen of the Great War in Rovereto.
