SIMPLE SEARCH
The simple search is used to search for general terms.

Example: paris "small gallery" louvre
The aim of this method is to find a major number of documents containing the above mentioned words and phrases.
A phrase is constructed of all possible sequences of the adjacent words. The most effective method to use a phrase search is to use brackets before and after.
The search of words in lower case will also automatically find upper case words. For example, if you search paris you will also find Paris and PARIS
But the keyword search with a mix of lower and upper case letters will find only the exact match. For example the search parIS will only find parIS

+noir +film -"pinot noir"
Depending on the neccessity, words to be included can be preceeded by the sign + and words to be excluded by the sign -. In the example above, the search will only find documents containing film and noir, but not those containing pinot noir

instrument;music;antique
This example is equal to "instrument music antique" (ie, the three words inside brackets).

farm*
This search will result in pages containg the root of the word farm: farm, farmer, farmhouse, farming etc.

ADVANCED SEARCH

The advanced search is used for very specified results; if you need to find date relevant information or if you want to use boolean parameters, the AltaVista Advanced Search offers one of the most powerful instruments on the internet.

What is the difference between the advanced and the simple search?
The main difference between these two methods the use of boolean parameters in advanced search; OR, AND, AND NOT and NEAR. These parameters are used to create a relation between the chosen keywords. This method allows you to personalize the search and find more precise results.
