2015 Christmas Markets in Emilia-Romagna

The air is filled with joyful melodies, the streets are lit with lights, the smell of vin brulé and roasted chestnuts wafts through the air, and every square becomes a place to meet with friends and relatives, surrounded by delights, curiosities and many gift ideas.


The Christmas markets in Emilia Romagna, like every year, will fill the squares and main streets of towns and cities starting at the end of November with traditional local products including crafts and food and wine as well as holiday specialties.



Starting from the north and following the lights that shine along the via Emilia, the first market you will meet is the “Farnesiani Christmas Markets”, in the heart of Piacenza. The majestic Piazza Cavalli will be enlivened for a whole month with colorful stands that offer all kinds of specialties along with many events including exhibitions, theater shows and lots of music for everyone. December 1-31.


During “Christmas in Grazzano Visconti”, the medieval town near Piacenza, you can walk among the streets and stores immersed in delightful crafts, items made from wrought iron, perfumes, soaps, sweets, honey, decorations and many curious items.  There will also be many kinds of entertainment such as the Great Santa Claus Walk, and there will be Christmas Mass, exhibitions, and nativity scenes.  December 6-8, 13, 20, 26, 27, 31 and January 6.


Again near Piacenza, on December 6 the place to be is Bobbio with the “Snail Fair Christmas markets” and Castell’Arquato with the Christmas village “Winterland”.


In the heart of Piazza Ghiaia in Parma there are more than 60 Christmas Markets that offer excellent crafts, antiques and foodstuffs.  For Saint Lucy's day on Sunday, December 13, the village "Ancient crafts and flavors of the Duchy" will be set up.  November 29, December 6-8, 13.


Also Reggio Emilia and its nearby towns will be wearing white.  Your purchases will be even more fun in the company of Christmas songs played by the "zampognari" and by the shows performed.  Every square will offer gift items and typical crafts from this area thus creating a great Christmas shopping itinerary. December 6 to 31.


Modena will wish you a “Merry Christmas” with a full calendar of events.  Here you can eat frittelle, pata twister, crepes, doughnuts, delicious sweets and of course roasted chestnuts, walk around Santa Claus's Square where his helpers will welcome children who want to leave Santa a letter and ask for a gift.  A red train will connect the main stops of this Christmas town, chugging along among concerts, shows, nativity scenes and the Ice Academy.  November 28 – January 10.


If it's a gift, something you've been looking for, a special dress or accessory to wear during the holidays, or a decoration for the tree or a statue for your nativity scene, Bologna in December becomes one big sparkling shop window.  Stores will be open on Sundays, there will be local markets, exhibitions, themed markets and charity sales which will create a magical atmosphere in every part of this beautiful city.  Until January 6.


Just north of the Via Emilia, Christmas is coming to the center of Ferrara where the streets and squares will be lit up to host all kinds of events for a fascinating walk among street shows, stands selling local foods, tastings, crafts and Christmas decorations.  At the Christmas Village, besides the attractions for little kids, there will also be the studio of Ferrara Xmas Radio. Until January 10.


Continuing on from here towards the Po delta, you will come to the lagoon town of Comacchio, lit up for the holidays with a market selling crafts, used games, ceramics, books and comics.  There will be many events, especially for kids, shows with acrobats, fire-eaters, and people on stilts, theater shows, games and entertainment.  Christmas songs and choirs will warm your heart even more, getting you ready for the unmissable event with the traditional Christmas torch-lit procession on the water.  November 29, December 6, 8, 11-13, 19-20, 23-24, 26-27, 31, January 5-6.


Continuing towards the south, Ravenna, the UNESCO city, invites visitors to explore its historic center during the holidays under the glittering lights, with items and decorations of every kind and for every taste.  From the flower market to the local agricultural and organic products of female entrepreneurs from Romagna, to the market exhibition of antiques and crafts, the country market under the tee, the green health market and the artistic craft market, every corner of the city will have a surprise waiting for you.  From November 28 to January 6.


The smell of homemade sweets and decorated fir trees, the lights of festive shop windows and colored luminaries, and the sound of songs, children's laughter and the bells of the jolliest man in the world: these are all the ingredients for an enchanted Christmas in downtown Forlì! Until February 7.  Everyone will come to the square also on the three Sundays leading up to Christmas to wander around the stands selling clothing, shoes, accessories, bags, home goods and other merchandise. December 6, 13, 20.


The clowns and jesters of Santa Claus will lead you along the streets of the town of San Mauro Pascoli (Fc), to discover the Christmas delights and products offered and the shows, workshops, concerts and tasty snacks for everyone.  From November 29 to January 6.

Getting closer to the sea, here is Cesenatico which welcomes us in the splendid setting of its canal port lit up for the holidays, where, next to the lights of the Maritime Nativity Scene, every Sunday during the holiday season there will be a market with decorations, plants and flowers, gadgets, crafts, games, clothing, home goods, local food, sweets, and of course roasted chestnuts and vin brulé.  December 6, 8, 13, 20, 24-27 and January 1-3, 6. The canal port is just a few steps away from historic downtown where the party continues at the great Santa Claus Village, with attractions, games, markets and food stands for kids and families.  Until January 10.


Original gift ideas and refined decorations can be found in the ancient town of Sant’Agata Feltria (Rn), one of the most characteristic towns of the Montefeltro lands.  In the Christmas Town, markets of every kind are immersed in the happy notes of the traditional "zampogne" (bagpipes), with Christmas music and Santa Claus's band.  Kids will be welcomed by elves at Santa Claus's House where real reindeer will pull a sled guided by a Lapp.  November 29, December 6, 8, 13, 20.


If you are passing through San Giovanni in Marignano (Rn), you will find a warm Christmas atmosphere that will welcome you with the Village of Santa Claus's Elves and his house, tastings of local products along with crafts and home goods, workshops and shows, and the lottery “FantaNatale delle Favole”.  December 12-13, 20, 27 and January 6. The weekend of December 12 and 13 there will also be the  al "Ancient Fair of Saint Lucy”, a longstanding traditional fair that celebrates the end of the darkness both literally - the winter solstice is near - and spiritually, with the coming of Christmas.


Ancient Rimini will also celebrate Christmas in great style and for the occasion of the "Longest New Year's Eve in the world" there will be many experiences to be had from downtown to the beach.  At the Rimini Christmas Square, inside the Roman Arch of Augustus, from November 28 to January 10, twenty little Berlin-style pagodas will be dedicated to a Christmas craft market along with a traditional French merry-go-round.  The markets downtown will be many such as the craft market in the Vecchia Pescheria of Piazza Cavour and the Christmas Tree Fair on the Tiberius Bridge.


The chance to do some shopping under the sparkling Christmas lights can be had at the colorful little houses set up at the “Riccione Christmas Village” which offers passersby fun activities as well as typical local products and Christmas goods.  The Ferris wheel, the longest ice skating rink in Europe (180 meters) and the Ice Kingdom round out the Christmas festivities here.  Until January 24.
