2016 Halloween Celebrations

Trick or treat? Halloween is perfect for knocking on doors and inviting everyone, regardless of age, to experience the mystery and magic inside the walls of enchanted castles, with guided candlelight tours, scary games, meetings with ghosts and witches, but also to enjoy tasty treats. The night of October 31 will be a scary night and a thrilling experience.

This journey into terror starts in the spooky settings of the Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, excellent locations for a bewitched atmosphere of whispered stories and glimpses of ghosts.  For those who love mysteries, gluttons for pumpkins, and those who are fearless in the face of horror and are ready to take on their worst nightmares in the secret passages of the fortresses, strongholds and manors, getting lost in the hidden corners of the castles in this area will be a delight with excellent dinners, guided nighttime visits and long ghost hunting nights.  The most courageous can spend the whole night among the ancient walls by booking at the castles that have accommodations. From October 29 to November 1.

Not very far away, Alfonsine (Ra) teaches us how this holiday actually has European roots related to the pagan tradition of celebrating dead souls on the night between October 31 and November 1. The itinerary on this night will go along the gloomy Senio river up to the center of town. Along with the big show of dancing and fire games there will also be a Halloween themed show with flag wavers, drums, fire eaters, fortune tellers, music and DJ sets. October 31.

Chills will also run along the streets and squares of Cervia (Ra).  On Halloween night the city will be invaded by scary labyrinths, markets, rides, music and areas such as the "Zombie Infected Area", shows such as the great magic show "The Big Trick", and the unmissable nighttime Zombie Walk Cervia. October 31.

In Riolo Terme, just inland from Ravenna, on October 31 the big event is Samhain the Celtic new year's. This is an ancient harvest festival, held when people celebrated the land resting and the beginning of the dark season and the long wait for a hopeful new beginning with the arrival of spring.  Some of these rituals are reflected in today's farming culture in this area.  Riolo Terme will celebrate all of this heritage with a historical reenactment of the Celtic era, with parades of good versus evil, fireworks, and a final bonfire, a collective ritual thought to bring good luck to the coming year. After the final demon’s bonfire, there will be fireworks displays and for the very brave, a masquerade ball will be held at the former church of Sala S. Giovanni until morning. The festivities continue on November 1 with the opening of the 14th century fortress and a guided visit with Caterina Sforza, the most talked about noblewoman of Romagna.

Magical figures and scary zombie parades will fill the streets while witches fly through the sky of Comacchio (Fe). Sgarabusen, the naughty elf, will bother adults and children throughout the party.  Small kids can have the thrill of going to the Luna Horror Park and participating in the Cursed Treasure Hunt and be made even scarier by the horror face painting. If you go to the Magic Cave, your future will be revealed to you or you can go discover the curse of the Vascello Ghost, but along the road watch out for the zombie and ghost parade and the gigantic beach balls. The bravest palates can try the condemned roasted chestnuts and Dracula's blood. October 30 and 31.

In Romagna, during the night before All Saints' Day, before going to bed, it was custom to leave the table set.  Water, wine, bread and oil were left out for the souls of the dead who could return for a visit.  This tradition has been resurrected in Castrocaro Terme, near Forlì, but revisited with a medieval theme.  Even the location is spooky: the castle on a ledge whose ancient walls hold many mysteries.  Will visitors have a close encounter with the souls of those who used to inhabit the castle?  You can find out late at night on October 31, accompanied by the wavering light of hundreds of torches.  At the Enoteca del Castello, transformed for this occasion into the “Tavern of Mysteries”, traditional dishes from the Tuscan-Romagna area will be served so that guests can recuperate after all the thrills and chills.

In the heart of Rimini, during this magic night, the City Museum will become the host of bewitched events dedicated in particular to the littlest monsters.

Another excellent location for Halloween events is the parks of the Riviera, where the fun is guaranteed with amazing deals. Mirabilandia, this year starting on October 8, will be invaded by pumpkins, witches, monsters and spiteful spirits, while on October 15, for those that are not afraid of their worst nightmares, the gates will open on the Horror Zones where, in the kingdom of zombies, more than 5 horror tunnels will offer scary shows that will leave you breathless. Shows and parades will rule until October 31 also in the mysterious kingdom of Fiabilandia; surprises and special meetings will be the stars of Italia in Miniatura from October 29 to November 2, and during those same days you can go deep into the dark paths of the Aquarium of Cattolica, where anyone who brings a pumpkin gets in free! At Oltremare, instead, from October 30 to November 2 anyone wearing a costume gets in free, a great chance for those who want to participate in the costume parade at the lagoon! Also the Butterfly House will open its doors to kids who want to experience one hour of thrills in the company of insects and invertebrates, October 30 and 31.
