A 2015 Halloween So Great It's Scary! The parties in Emilia Romagna

Trick or treat?  Halloween is perfect for knocking on doors and inviting everyone, regardless of age, to experience the mystery and magic inside the walls of enchanted castles, with guided candlelight tours, scary games, meetings with ghosts and witches, but also tasty treats, for an exciting experience.

This journey into terror starts on the spooky settings of the Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, excellent locations for a bewitched atmosphere of whispered stories and glimpses of ghosts.  For those who love mysteries, gluttons for pumpkins, and those who are fearless in the face of horror and are ready to take on their worst nightmares in the secret passages in the fortresses, strongholds and manors, getting lost in the hidden corners of the 24 castles in this area will be a delight with excellent dinners, guided nighttime visits and long ghost hunting nights.  The most courageous can spend the whole night among the ancient castle walls by booking at the 14 castles that have accommodations.  From October 25 to November 1.

Sleepless nights will be had at the Ravenna Nightmare Film Festival. The most important event in Italy for horror and fantasy films will take over the city with the International Feature Film Competition, the heart of this event, which will bring this genre's fans the best recent productions from around the world.  This competition will be held together with the International Short Film Competition and a series of premieres and initiatives, including the Nightmare Lectures, which are appointments and conferences with great film makers. October 28 - November 1.

Besides on film, the streets and squares of the city will also be invaded by real live ghosts.  Among the events on schedule for Halloween on October 31, there are the guided visits Ghost to Ghost and Walk with a Crime which will provide just the right amount of suspense, while workshops and guided tours at the Ancient Port of Classe and at the Artificerie Almagià as well as the parades in costume will entertain kids and adults.  The evening will end with the Concert for the Commemoration of the Departed in the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo.  But the surprises will continue until November 1.

Not very far away, Alfonsine (Ra) teaches us how this holiday actually has European roots in an ancient pre-Celtic pastoral and agricultural new year's celebration which marked first the arrival of autumn and then the new winter immediately afterwards. That celebration was based on rites welcoming the dead who were thought to be able to favour the harvest for the following year as well as the family’s prosperity.  There will thus be a lot of celebrating with plentiful banquets, dancing, shows and never ending fun.  October 31.

Chills will also run along the streets and squares of Cervia (Ra).  On Halloween the city will be invaded by scary labyrinths, markets, rides, shows including the "Horror Show" - a mix of dance, gymnastics and theater -, soul music, bossanova, reggae and the exciting Halloween Contest. October 31.

Magical figures and scary zombie parades will fill the streets while witches will fly through the sky of Comacchio (Fe). Sgarabusen, the naughty elf, will bother adults and children throughout the party.  The theme of the evening is Dante and his works, which have been reinterpreted in a new horror version.  For those who love turbulent nights, there is the Tugurio House, Zombie Walking, the Cursed Temple, the Monster Show and trips along the canals with Charon.  Not to mention the roasted chestnuts and Dracula's blood, fireworks, prizes and music.  October 31.

In Riolo Terme, inland from Ravenna, on October 31 the big event is Samhain the Celtic new year's. This is an ancient harvest festival, held when people celebrated the land resting and the beginning of the dark season and the long wait for a hopeful new beginning with the arrival of spring.  Some of these rituals are reflected in today's farming culture in this area.  Riolo Terme will celebrate all of this heritage with a historical reenactment of the Celtic era, with parades of good versus evil, fireworks, and a final bonfire, a collective ritual thought to bring good luck to the coming year.  Again this year the Romans will participate in this event with a battle between the Roman legions and the Celtic tribes, and with gladiator games.  The festivities continue on November 1 with the opening of the 14th century Fortress and a guided visit with Caterina Sforza, the most talked about noblewoman of Romagna.

In Romagna, during the night before All Saints' Day, before going to bed, it was custom to leave the table set.  Water, wine, bread and oil were left out for the souls of the dead who could return for a visit.  This tradition has been resurrected in Castrocaro Terme, near Forlì, but revisited with a medieval theme.  Even the location is spooky: the castle on a ledge whose ancient walls hold many mysteries.  Will visitors have a close encounter with the souls of those who used to inhabit the castle?  You can find out late at night on October 31, accompanied by the wavering light of hundreds of torches.  At the Enoteca del Castello, transformed for this occasion into the “Tavern of Mysteries”, traditional dishes from the Tuscan-Romagna area will be served so that guests can recuperate after all the thrills and chills.

In the heart of Rimini, during the magic night, the City Museum will become the host of bewitched events dedicated in particular to the littlest monsters.

Another excellent location for Halloween events is the parks of the Riviera.  Here fun is guaranteed with amazing events: dinner-shows, terror tunnels and Horror Zones in Mirabilandia, shows and parades at Fiabilandia, surprises and special meetings at Italia in Miniatura, and costume parties at the Aquarium in Cattolica and at Oltremare, and creative workshops at the Butterfly House.
