A summer of music – musical events, festivals and concerts. August 2016

This summer in Emilia-Romagna life is to the beat of music.  Again this year there will be a wide range of proposed events that will be held in excellent locations both in big towns and small ones, at the sea, in the cities of art and in the Apennines, which will be the backdrop to numerous happenings, many of which are free of charge with big names in music. From the huge calendar of events, we would like to highlight some of the main festivals and summer series, which run the gamut of every kind of music, from rhythm and blues to pop and rock, from classical music to contemporary sounds and folk, offering something for every kind of audience and preference.

Our journey among the notes starts with the 16th edition of Emilia Romagna Festival, the biggest summer festival of the region which offers 41 events until September 10, located throughout the provinces of Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena and Ravenna and nearby areas, and, as always, in exceptional places dedicated to the discovery of nature, architectonic traditions and culture. "Building Bridges”, focusing on the importance of cultural bridges, which are today more than ever occasions to build dialogue, exchange and mutual understanding, is the theme if this year’s edition.

Also in our region is a festival totally in touch with nature in the “Parks of Music”. Wonderful locations inside the Parks of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, from castles to gardens and woods, from visitor centers to squares, all of these will become the natural setting of concerts to be enjoyed while discovering the rich Parma and Piacenza heritage. Until September 4.

The sounds and notes of summer will accompany the public in their discovery of serendipity, those happy coincidences, those alchemies that Music in the Castle gives to its public.  This Emilia festival, on schedule until August 30 with free admission, will be held during 25 magical summer evenings in unique places with extraordinary singer-songwriters, great artists, and prestigious orchestras, hosted in castles, fortresses, parish churchyards, old farmhouse yards, gardens of ancient villas, squares and places usually closed to the public in the Lands of Verdi near Parma and reaching both Piacenza and Reggio Emilia. Coming soon is the style of Fabio Concato (Wednesday, August 3, Sorbolo, Pr), the unmistakeable rhythm of the Raffaella Romagnolo Blanco Notes Band (Thursday, August 4, Fontanellato, Pr), the voice of Claudio Lauretta (Friday, August 5, Zibello, Pr), the femininity of Amalia Ruocco (Saturday, August 20, Fontevivo, Pr), followed by the great Enrico Ruggeri (Friday, August 26, Fontevivo, Pr). Closing out the events of this festival is the Leo Nucci Italian Chamber Opera Ensemble (Tuesday, August 30, Polesine, Pr).

Also in Emilia this summer a prestigious itinerant festival of ethic and folk music will be held.  The 21st edition of Mundus, on schedule until August 15, will spread its vibrations among the territories in and around Reggio Emilia. The last three events in the month of August will be with Cristina Donà, Rita Marcotulli, Enzo Pietropaoli, Fabrizio Bosso, Javier Girotto, Saverio Lanza, and Cristiano Calcagnile, in honor of Fabrizio de Andrè, on August 1st; the African singer Mariama in "Moments like these", on August 3; and Enzo Pietropaoli in “Yatra Quartet” and "Line for Chet" a tribute to Chet Baker, on August 15.

Those who instead are in Bologna during the month of August should not miss "Atti Sonori... Il teatro Musicale d'Estate!". Outdoors in the Courtyard of the Piccolo Teatro del Baraccano you can spend twelve nights enjoying concerts and musicals, silent films and symphonies, all after having a tasty aperitif. August 1-31.

Street musicians from all over the world will gather in the lagoon town of Comacchio for the Preview Buskers Festival on August 19. About 1000 musicians will perform with more than 100 free shows a day.

There will be a lot of music also on the beach, at the first light of dawn, for a unique sensory experience. Night owls and early birds can meet up at the Lidi di Comacchio (Fe), with the suave notes of classical music. Until August 28.
