A summer of music. August 2015

The music continues into the month of August with many festivals and concert series of which we are giving a brief overview.  We kindly invite you to see the summer program of the August music events in Emilia Romagna.  In the mountains or under a beach umbrella, in a square or in the cool setting of historic art locations, the music on schedule will offer everything you want and more.

Our journey among the notes continues with the packed 15th edition of Emilia Romagna Festival, the biggest summer festival of the region which offers 41 events until September 16, located throughout the provinces of Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena and Ravenna and nearby areas, and as always, in exceptional places dedicated to the discovery of nature, architectonic traditions and culture.  "Gateway to the Indies", a journey to discover the Orient and faraway lands, is the theme of this year's edition.

In Piacenza and the nearby towns in Val Tidone is the “Val Tidone Festival”, which will run until October 30.  The series closes out its summer sessions in Agazzano, on Saturday, August 1, with Ayami Ikeba on the piano, and it will start up again in September.

The sounds and notes of summer will accompany the public in their discovery of serendipity, those happy coincidences, those alchemies that Music in the Castle gives to its public.  This Emilia festival, on schedule until August 30 with free admission, will be held during 25 magical summer evenings in unique places with extraordinary singer-songwriters, great artists, and prestigious orchestras, hosted in castles, fortresses, parish churchyards, old farmhouse yards, gardens of ancient villas, squares and places usually closed to the public in the Lands of Verdi near Parma and reaching both Piacenza and Reggio Emilia.  Coming up is the style of Leonardo Manera (Sunday, August 2, Salsomaggiore Terme, Pr), the complicity of Daniele Di Gregorio, Massimo Manzi and Giacomo Dominici (Friday, August 7, Varano de’ Melegari, Pr), the enthralling performance of the comic Baz (Sunday, August 9, Zibello, Pr), Marco Gerboni together with Paolo Biondi (Sunday, August 16, Pellegrino Parmense, Pr), the show of the Magician Forest (Thursday, August 27, San Secondo Parmense, PR), and Antonio Rossi with Gianluca Farina, Simone Raineri, Claudio Galli and Sandro Piovani (Sunday, August 30, Mezzani, Pr).

Also in Emilia this summer until August 15 is the prestigious wandering festival of ethic and folk music.  The 20th edition of Mundus will spread its vibrations among the territories in and around Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara.  Among the artists performing in August are the Alessandro Lanzoni Trio (Wednesday, August 5, Correggio, Re), Cristina Donà (Thursday, August 6, Reggio Emilia), Quintorigo & Roberto Gatto (Tuesday, August 11, Reggio Emilia), and Rosario Giuliani & Luciano Biondini (Saturday, August 15, Reggio Emilia).

There are still a lot of events on schedule until September 21 as part of Armoniosamente being held in and around Modena. Along with the notes of instruments like the organ, trumpet, trombone, and soprano voice, this festival also offers "wandering conferences" with the aim of shedding some light on curiosities of the places visited, such as monuments, views, Apennine landscapes and other special aspects of this area.

In the heart of Bologna, the delightful square of Baraccano will host six dates of the summer theater and music festival "Atti Sonori. Il Teatro Musicale d'Estate" which ranges from dramaturgy to a recital-concert on tango, from noir psycho-comedy to the music and baile flamenco concert and even symphonies, overtures and other entertainment. August 1, 6, 8, 13, 16, 22, 23.

The musical journey continues in Ferrara with the first edition of Puedes Summer Night. It lasts one month and offers more than 30 free concerts, this festival held under the ancient walls of Ferrara, ranging from cocktail hours with music to cultural initiatives and food events to accompany the last week leading up to the Ferrara Buskers Festival.  The journey will dive into the reggae of Mellow Mood, the romantic pop of Sagi Rei late into Saint Lawrence's night, and the musical theater show of L’Orchestraccia, with the star of Romanzo Criminale, then continuing on to the melodies of the rapper Ensi from Mtv, the energy of timeless rock with Bobby Solo, the enthusiasm of Rio and then the come back of the legendary Strike and the much loved Statuto, just to name a few of the highly qualified musicians that will perform under the Estense walls.  August 1-30.

Unexpected sounds will again be at the heart of the 50th edition of the concert series Musica Pomposa, held in the evocative setting of the thousand year old Abbey of Pomposa, near the Lidi di Comacchio.  Among the upcoming concerts: "Una voce poco fa..." (Tuesday, August 4), "Lectura Dantis" (Wednesday, August 12), "Arka Ira" (Wednesday, August 19), then closing with "Bach to Italy: Sonate per Flauto e Cembalo", Thursday, August 27.

In Ravenna you can still take part to the 54th International Festival of Organ Music, the most historic in Italy, in which every year the best international artists participate playing the ancient Mascioni organ in the very beautiful Basilica di San Vitale, a UNESCO heritage site.  The upcoming dates of this event are Monday, August 3 with Johannes Skudlik, Monday, August 10 with Roman Perucki, Monday, August 17 with Lars Frederiksen and Monday, August 24 with Inge Beck.

Also in the heart of the mosaic city, on the porch of the basilica of San Francesco, a full calendar of events is being held for the 12th edition of "Sotto le Stelle di Galla Placidia".  As always, there will be prestigious participants such as the Tiger Dixie Band, Sunday, August 2, the Magnasco Movie Quartet, Friday, August 7, Lele il Saraceno, Friday, August 14, Andrea Capezzuoli and Company, Sunday, August 16, and the Hukulele Lovers, Friday, August 21.

Going inland from Ravenna, in Riolo Terme the last days of August, from the 26 to 29, the longest running rock festival in Emilia Romagna, "Frogstock", will be held.  The special guest for the 22nd edition is the histrionic rapper and songwriter from Puglia Caparezza with his “Museica Tour II – The Exhibition”, in concert on Saturday, August 29.  There will also be, before and after the shows, the live music cocktail hours and the adrenaline filled After Shows at the Joker Disco Bar.  Music can also be tasted here, by stopping at the Romagna “Traditional Fast Food” and at the grappa stand called “Kill the Coffee”.

A lot of music also on the beach, at the first light of dawn, for a unique sensorial experience.  Night owls and early birds will come together at the bathing establishments of Pinarella (Ra), every Sunday until August 23, with Musical Dawns; at the Lidi di Comacchio (Fe), with the suave notes of chanson française, classic, modern and contemporary music, jazz, Irish folk and Balkan music; and finally, on the beaches of Cesenatico, from August 2 to 15, with concerts , one with the magic of taranta, and the other a musical for a string and vocal quartet.

Delicate and suave music, again in Cesenatico, can be heard also in the calm Piazzetta delle Conserve for the occasion of "Notturni alle Conserve", on schedule until August 18.

In Rimini the turning of summer into fall is marked by the prestigious Sagra Musicale Malatestiana, one of the oldest Italian music festivals that focuses on great symphonic orchestras, conductors and internationally known soloists, besides original projects where music is interwoven with other arts.  The first date of the 66th edition is on August 23 with "La dolce vita: music from Italian cinema"; played by the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, directed by Steven Mercurio.

The stage will be shaking in the Green Pearl which is ready to host great names for the "Deejay & Riccione Estate" being broadcast live for the entire month of August.  There will be very young talents - singers, bands, dj producers, comics and imitators - as well as the stars of the musical summer such as Annalisa, Francesco Sarcina, Levante, Raige, Il Pagante (Monday, August 3), Fedez, J-Ax, Il Cile, Madh (Thursday, August 6), Jack Savoretti, Zero Assoluto, Giovanni Caccamo (Saturday, August 10), Neffa and Baby K (and among the comedic guests Paolo Migone and Ruggero dei Timidi, Saturday, August 15), the Street Clerks (Wednesday, August 19), Emis Killa, Guè Pequeno, Marracash, and Clementino (Saturday, August 22).
