Wiki Loves Monuments 2016

From September 1 to 30 there will be the fifth edition of Wiki Loves Monuments. This is the biggest international photography competition in the world that allows citizens and tourists to photograph monuments around the region and share them on the website Wikimedia. Wiki Loves Monuments.

The competition is aimed at documenting the historical and environmental wealth of this area with as many images as possible, allowing them to be published all over the web and in particular on Wikipedia.

After the classification and first prizes won in past years also by photos of the beautiful sites in Emilia Romagna, the 2016 edition is shaping up to be even more widespread and full of photos. Thanks to a collaboration with the Regional Secretary of the MIBACT this year 661 monuments have been opened up by 85 institutions around the region. These monuments can be freely photographed for the whole month of September by anyone participating in the competition.

Particular attention will be given to the Starred Monuments of Emilia Romagna, joined together under this year’s theme #ERStars, which is a special contest focusing on the monuments and excellent places mentioned in the famous Guides of the Touring Club. To help everyone get to know the “Starred Monuments of Emilia Romagna” there are more than 27 photography walks that will be held throughout the month of September all around the region. The excursions are all free of charge and are organized specifically to discover the monuments and hidden places of each city.

Piacenza will be the first city to start things off on Saturday, September 3, with a city excursion among churches and historic squares in downtown, during which it will also be possible to take pictures inside the city churches.

Saturday, September 10 it will be Parma’s turn with the Complesso del Palazzo della Pilotta: this excursion will allow visitors into the rooms of this Palazzo, including the rooms and salons that are usually closed to the public. For this event there will be a single ticket costing €5 for all three of the buildings of the Pilotta.

Saturday, September 17 a walk is scheduled along the streets of the center of Bertinoro (Fc). This lovely hill town center, known for its panorama, will be the star of a photography excursion that will guide participants in the discovery of the most important sites both in town and in nearby areas.

Bologna will be the star on Sunday, September 18 with a walk to discover the most interesting art and views of this ancient city. The meeting point is at the Pinacoteca Nazionale at 3pm and leaving from here, participants will go on to discover the rooms of Palazzo d'Accursio and then go up to admire unusual glimpses of the city of Bologna.

But there are many other cities that are participating in this project and that have special visits planned: Pieve di cento, Canossa, Ferrara, Gatteo, Longiano, Castello dArgile, Fiorano Modenese, Ravenna, Cesena, Correggio, San Pietro in Casale, Bologna, Bentivoglio, Castello di Agazzano, Comacchio, Minerbio, Vignola, Castel Maggiore, Modigliana, San Cesario sul Panaro, Travo.

Even if the photographs can be uploaded on the competition site only between September 1 to 30, 2016, they do not necessarily have to have been taken in that period. You can in fact participate with photos taken in the past. At the end of the competition, your photos will become part of Wikimedia Commons, the multimedia database of Wikimedia, where they will be associated with articles on Wikipedia and made available in every language worldwide.
