Crossroads 2014

The 2014 edition of this travelling festival hopes to set a new record: there are about 400 musicians who will perform, for 50 evenings of shows over three months, in about twenty cities all around the region Emilia-Romagna, from Piacenza to Rimini.

Crossroads has now reached its fifteenth edition, which will be held from February 28 to May 24.  Fifteen years of travelling along the ever more surprising trajectories of jazz and other styles closely linked to jazz.

Great masters, well known stars and up-and-coming musicians, artists who have left their mark on jazz and others who will soon do the same in the future of improvised music, young talents and niche names with impressive musical personalities: the programme of Crossroads 2014 will over a 360° look at the styles of modern jazz.

The artistic selection of Crossroads will have a wide geographic range, with Italian, European, American, South American and Asian musicians.

The opening will be held, as has been the tradition for many years, at the Teatro De André in Casalgrande (Re), on February 28.  The Cordoba Reunion, a totally Argentinian group, will perform with the saxophone player Javier Girotto, who has been riding the wave of Latin jazz for years.

Starting in the month of March, there will be an uninterrupted sequence of artists of notable interest, starting with the quartet of the best Italian jazz drummer: Roberto Gatto (Ferrara, March 1, Jazz Club Torrione San Giovanni).

From the American front, a big name will come: Kurt Elling, the most acclaimed jazz singer among those today, with a voice and interpretative personality that are truly overflowing (Rimini, March 5, Teatro degli Atti).

On March 8 in Massa Lombarda (Ra) spectators can hear a duo that represents two of best jazz musicians, the singer Maria Pia De Vito and the bassist Ares Tavolazzi, while another singer of worldwide fame, the British Sarah Jane Morris, will perform on March 9 at the Teatro Comunale in Gambettola (Fc), also in a duo with the guitarist Antonio ForcioneAlso in Massa Lombarda (Ra), two days of “Massa Sonora”, which contains the most innovative players of Italian jazz: on March 14 the group Luminal of the pianist Dimitri Sillato, a solo by the guitarist Simone Massaron and the quintet Rollerball; on March 15 the exalting and sweeping orchestra of the Collettivo El Gallo Rojo.

The moving American singer-songwriter who mixes jazz and soul, Raul Midón, will perform on March 20 in Modena (La Tenda).  A jazz singer and guitarist with the grit of a true rocker is Canadian Terez Montcalm, who will perform on March 21 in Rimini.  Another slice of American contemporary will shine on March 22 in Ferrara with the Baida Quartet of the trumpet player  Ralph Alessi and on March 26 in Parma (Casa della Musica) with the trio of pianist Joey Calderazzo.

The most sophisticated jazz that flirts with the avant-garde can be heard on March 28 in Cesenatico (Fc) at the Teatro Comunale, with the quartet “Special Dish” of the singer Cristina Zavalloni.

The month will end with the events of “Cassero Jazz” in Castel San Pietro Terme (Bo) (“Cassero” Teatro Comunale): on March 29 with the musical reading created by Paolo Caruso and Franco Costantini, followed by a duo of two improvisers with boundless exuberance, Antonello Salis (piano, accordion) and Hamid Drake (drums and percussion); on March 30 with the quartet of the singer Ada Montellanico, who will take on a repertoire by Abbey Lincoln.

In the month of April, there will be many moments of great musical expression: on April 2, at the Teatro President, with the guitarist Bill Frisell, emblem of post-modern jazz first and then a provocative re-interpreter of American folk roots through jazz; on April 3 in Modena with the mellow Brazil sung by Paula Morelenbaum with her Bossarenova Trio.

Also in April are three days of free musical research in Dozza (Bo), Teatro Comunale, for “Dozza Jazz”: on April 4 with the trio made up of Roberto Bartoli, Pasquale Mirra and Danilo Mineo; on April 5 with a double tribute to the South African saxophone player Sean Bergin starring the duo of Daniele D’Agaro and Saverio Tasca and the Re-Union Trio (Roberto Bellatalla, Sandro Satta and Fabrizio Spera); on April 6 with Youlook, with Luisa Cottifogli, Aldo Mella and Gigi Biolcati.

On April 13 at the Teatro Rossini in Lugo (Ra), with music and opera arias reinterpreted by the brilliant duo that joins the piano of Danilo Rea and the trumpet of Flavio Boltro; on April 17 in Modena the trio of the very young Chilean saxophone player Melissa Aldana will perform; in just a few years she has made her name on the New York scene where she is currently considered one of the most surprising rising stars.

A date in Russi (Ra), April 24, at the Teatro Comunale, with Fabrizio Bosso, a great star, to whom a particular space will be dedicated together with the Argentinian saxophone player Javier Girotto at the helm of their sextet Latin Mood.

The month of April will end with another cult group, the Tinissima Quartet of the saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti who will perform his revolutionary “Monk’n’roll” in Russi (Ra), on April 30, for the occasion of the International UNESCO Day of Jazz.

The month of May opens with an original production of music by Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus and Jimi Hendrix which will see the involvement of both Quintorigo and the Italian Jazz Orchestra directed by Fabio Petretti and with the extraordinary participation of Roberto Gatto on the drums (Forlì, May 1, Teatro Diego Fabbri).

The travelling festival will continue with Fabrizio Bosso at the head of his Spiritual Trio at the Teatro dell’Osservanza in Imola (Bo), on May 2.

On schedule for the following evenings is one of the longest running Italian festivals ever: Ravenna Jazz. The forty-first edition of this Ravenna event will be held from May 3 to 13 and will be big: eleven days of concerts of various styles, from the great names performing at the theatres to the enticing concerts of the clubs, besides a long series of "Aperitifs" concerts, afternoon events in many locations around town.

The opening of Ravenna Jazz 2014, on May 3 at the Teatro Alighieri, will be in the hands of the  superstar of Indian percussions Trilok Gurtu, who will welcome as a special guest of his group Enrico Rava in an original production, which should cause musical sparks given that Gurtu will present one of his most jazz oriented projects: “Spellbound - World of Trumpets”, focused on the range of these brass instruments.

Another legend of jazz mixed with world music is the guitarist Al Di Meola, who will arrive in Ravenna on May 4 to perform with his quartet a moving and captivating tribute to the Beatles.

A huge event will also be free of charge in Piazza del Popolo in Ravenna on May 5 with two hundred young musicians, among orchestras, percussions and choirs, who will give life to “Pazzi di Jazz” Young Project, under the direction of Tommaso Vittorini and Ambrogio Sparagna and with the soloist Paolo Fresu.

Teatro Alighieri will host the other great stars of the festival: the pianist Stefano Bollani, in a duo with the accordion player Antonello Salis which will certainly be a fiery meeting between two boundless personalities (May 10), and the great orchestral project that reunites the trumpet of Paolo Fresu and the piano of Uri Caine with the PMJO Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra in “Reflections on Sketches of Spain”, a philological reading of the masterpiece by Miles Davis and Gil Evans with a dose of free interpretations (May 13).

Even more refined than in past editions of the festival are the music events in the clubs, which will involve many clubs in Ravenna (Mama’s Club), Lido Adriano (Cisim) and Piangipane (Teatro Socjale).

It begins with a series of duets of great charm, which involve both great names in jazz and stars of alternative rock: from Raiz and Fausto Mesolella (May 6) to Luca Aquino and Carmine Ioanna (May 7), Vincent Peirani with Ulf Wakenius (May 8) and Luigi Tessarollo with Roberto Taufic (May 9).  Bigger groups will play on May 11 tightrope walkers of Iswhat?! of Napoleon Maddox (who will also host a beatbox workshop on May 10 and 11) and on May 12 with the trio of Raffaele Casarano, Marco Bardoscia and Boris Savoldelli and their revisitation of The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

In the month of May, besides the marathon of Ravenna Jazz, Crossroads will also host a long leg in Correggio (Re), eleven full days, from May 14 to 24, for Correggio Jazz, another festival within a festival, which this year will be very international and as always out in front in terms of current jazz trends.

Besides the concert of Enrico Rava on May 20 with his New Quartet, the Teatro Asioli of Correggio (Re) will host the trio of the guitarist Federico Casagrande (May 14; the evening will be opened by the quartet of singer Valentina Preda, classified among the winners of the competition “La musica Libera. Libera la musica” organized by the Region of Emilia-Romagna); an event in crescendo with Dino Rubino in a piano solo, followed by the duo voice-piano of Barbara Casini and Alessandro Lanzoni, then ending with a new trio which will bring all the stars of the evening together, with Rubino on the tenor horn (May 15); the pianist Fabrizio Puglisi in a solo the same evening with the duo “Soupstar” of Gianluca Petrella on the trombone and Giovanni Guidi on the piano (May 16); and again Giovanni Guidi, but in a piano solo, followed by the duo that brings together Fabrizio Puglisi with the voice of John De Leo (May 17); the international quintet  On Dog, which includes among others the guitarist Mark Solborg and the saxophone player Francesco Bigoni (May 21); the quintet Overseas of the Norwegian contrabass player (who is now a New Yorker) Eivind Opsvik (May 22); the trio of the original Danish guitarist Jakob Bro (May 23); the tribute to Charlie Parker in the trio of the British multi-instrumentalist Django Bates, who for this occasion will play the piano (May 24).
