Emilia Romagna Festival 2013

The 2013 season of  Emilia Romagna Festival - ERF will open its long musical itinerary with Giuseppe Verdi on July 3 at the Rocca Sforzesca in Imola and will end on September 22 at Teatro Masini in Faenza.


Classic, contemporary, theater, expressive experimentation: 36 events in about three months, in more than 20 locations in Emilia Romagna, distributed among the provinces of Bologna, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Ferrara.

For the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi, this year's Gran Galà Lirico will begin with the most beautiful arias by this Maestro from Busseto, played by the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, and sung by soprano Gladys Rossi, by mezzo soprano Anna Maria Chiuri, and by the tenor Daniel Szeili, and directed by Li Biao, an internationally famous percussionist as well as an acclaimed conductor.


The XIII edition of this festival will close on September 22 at the Teatro Masini di Faenza with a concert that pays tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki for the occasion of his 80th birthday, organized in collaboration with Ravello Festival and the Sagra Musicale Umbra. An event in which this famous Polish composer will play the role of both writer and director of the Orchestra da Camera di Perugia with Massimo Mercelli as the flute soloist. On schedule are pieces by Antonín Dvořák and Penderecki: "Serenade", "Adagietto per flauto" from "Il Paradiso perduto" and the "Sinfonietta n. 2".


Here you can find a preview of the calendar of 36 events held, as always, in excellent locations, frequently unusual and evocative, which promote nature, architectonic traditions and culture: Palazzo Fantini in Tredozio at the Abbazia di Pomposa, the Chiostro del Monastero di San Francesco in Mordano, at the Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso of Castel San Pietro, the Arena delle balle di paglia in Cotignola, and at the Oratorio della Peschiera in Volano di Codigoro in the Po Delta Park.



brunocaninoerfestival1.jpgAs in past editions, there will be many great international artists, starting with pianist Bruno Canino a true institution of Italian concert giving, performing with a young but promising international star, the Chinese cellist Jiapeng Nie (July 18 – Forlì, Chiesa del Suffragio). Then there will be the duo of Moni Ovadia and Carlo Boccadoro to explore the melodic developments of yiddish and humus music, eastern European Jewish music (July 19 – Cotignola, Arena delle balle di paglia). With Rostislav Krimer, the internationally known pianist, there will be the world premiere of Lux Aeterna by the Russian composer Valery Voronov (July 27 – Mordano, Chiostro del Monastero di San Francesco); while with Jovan Kolundžija, the greatest living Serb violinist, you can listen to the masterpieces of the Sonate and Partite for violin by Johann Sebastian Bach (August 4 - Codigoro, Abbazia di Pomposa); then a young talent with a strong personality, Emmanuel Ceysson, known worldwide as the“l’enfant terribile of the harp” for his communicative energy and virtuoso gifts (August 6 – Imola, Palazzo Tozzoni). Moving on from the soloists to the orchestras, beginning with Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta (Orchestra of glass pearls) which represents the fresh, lively face of Estonian orchestral music and its adventurous spirit which is continuously searching: directed by Pier Carlo Orizio and accompanied by the mezzo-soprano Daniela Pini they will perform a program both playful and profoundly spiritual (August 19 - Codigoro, Abbazia di Pomposa).


Sponsored by the Cultural Program of the European Union, once again this year there will be MUSMA Music Masters on Air, created with the intent to promote young composers and musicians, and to educate the public about contemporary classical music. This event is the result of collaboration among 8 european festivals  - and ERF is the only Italian partner of the MUSMA network together with RER-Radio Emilia Romagna - and other national radio stations. The program, with three world premieres and one national premiere, along with the ancient music of Gesualdo da Venosa, the 400th year commemoration of his death being on September 8, will be recorded and aired by RER - Radio Emilia Romagna, and the other radio partners in Europe. Stars of this exceptional event are the Coro Costanzo Porta directed by the maestro Antonio Greco (August 30 – Forlì, Abbazia di San Mercuriale).


AlexanderHlshofferfestival2.jpgSponsored by two prestigious German institutions are two concerts in September: on September 2 at the Teatro Rossini in Lugo the Ensemble Villa Musica, one of the oldest and most prestigious Chamber music academies in the world from the region Renania-Palatinato, will perform together with the cellist Alexander Hülshoff, with a program of pieces by Arcangelo Corelli to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the death of this Romagna composer, and pieces by Rossini, in one of Rossini's best places; on September 3 at the Duomo in Forlì in collaboration with AUDI ArtExperience and co-produced by Ravello Festival the Audi Chorus will perform with Corni dell'Opera of Munich, directed by Martin Steidler, in a wide reportorial including songs by Brahms, Strauss, Stravinskij, Schumann, Rimskij-Korsakov, Schubert, Hindemith and Mahler.


Again in September, two more events of great artistic quality: Christoph Stradner first cello of the Symphonic Orchestra of Vienna who will play a 1680 Stradivari, accompanied by the young American pianist Andrew Pae (September 4 – Castel San Pietro Terme, Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso); followed by a new original production of Emilia Romagna Festival entitled Buffi si nasce with Bruno Praticò, a great comic bass, along with the young baritone Roberto Gentili and by the ensemble I Fiati Associati (September 7 – Sasso Morelli, Villa La Babina).



SunghyunChoerfestival.jpgIn the vast program of Emilia Romagna young talents are always the focus. New this year besides the Primo Premio!, the historic section dedicated to young musicians, winners of prestigious Italian and international competitions, there will be three concerts by two young musicians from the prestigious BJIMC - Beijing International Music Competition (Beijing), who will have the chance to perform in Italy thanks to the agreement signed between the Emilia Romagna Festival and this Chinese competition. This agreement will link two of the most important national and international cultural events for the next five years, and one or more winners of the BJIMC will be included, the year after the BJIMC qualifications, in the program of Emilia Romagna Festival and in that of the partner events and seasons of ERF. These first two winners of the BJIMC will perform at the XIII edition of the Festival: the flutist from South Korea Sunghyun Cho, 23 years old, who besides arriving 3rd place at the BJIMC 2012, also won 1st prize at the International Competition 'Severino Gazzelloni' 2012; and the Siberian flute player Matvey Demin, 20 years old, who places 6th at the BJIMC 2012. These two young artists will be the stars of three unmissable concerts that will be held at the Torri dell’Acqua in Budrio (August 7), at the Liceo Masini in Forlì (August 9) and at the Chiesa di San Girolamo in Tossignano (August 10).


Among the other up and coming talents, there will also be the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic, a great company made up of about 100 young talented musicians – from 16 to 22 years old, all students of the best conservatories in Turkey - and applauded by all the international critics which, directed by the wand of the great Cem Mansur, will perform a varied musical program including pieces by a contemporary Turkish composer, Tüzün (September 14 – Forlì, Duomo).



marescotti2erfestival.jpgFinally, also for this 8th edition, the Emilia Romagna Festival Career Award will be given, an award begun in 2010 with which the Festival hopes to pay tribute to the great international stars who with their genius honor music and the arts. Given in past editions to Maxence Larrieu, Quirino Principe and Catherine Spaak, this year it has been awarded to the excellent Romagna actor Ivano Marescotti. For the occasion of the Award, Marescotti will star in the comic monologue LUI. UN QUAIÓN QUALSIASI which ranges from pieces from Dante's Divine Comedy in Romagna dialect, to Orlando Furioso by Ariosto and other poems by Raffaello Baldini, Tonino Guerra, Nino Pedretti, Olindo Guerrini (Stecchetti), Walter Galli, Cesare Zavattini and many other authors (August 24 – Tredozio, Palazzo Fantini).
