FESTA DI GARIBALDI

Garibaldi Festival: Traditional Commemoration in Honour of the Italian Hero

Various locations

Cesenatico (FC)

This festival dates back to the year 1885 and commemorates August 2, 1849, when Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived here with 200 patriots; they had escaped from Rome and were heading for Venice, hunted both over land and sea by their pursuers.

Garibaldi and his men embarked in thirteen boats from Cesenatico, but after a short sail they were intercepted by the Austrian flotilla and forced to land at Magnavacca which is now Garibaldi's Port in Comacchio.

This seaside town has always been closely linked to Garibaldi, and the first monument ever dedicated to him is here. The high point of this festival will be when hundreds of "red shirts" (Garibaldi's men) take over Cesenatico on the first weekend of August.
