Everyone at table for mushrooms and truffles! - November 2014

The autumn season is characterized by new and typical smells and flavors at the table. This year the season has been quite good for products that grow in the underbrush, such as mushrooms and truffles. In the kitchen you can use them to make tasty recipes while in the areas where they grow they will become the subject of many fairs and festivals, which in turn become happy meeting places for enthusiasts, professionals or those who just love to eat good food!

The month of November begins with a traditional journey into the flavors of the Bologna hills and nearby areas with the "Tartufesta" (truffle festival) ( November schedule) which has returned to enliven the streets and squares of Apennine towns. This event is a plethora of markets, delicious dishes, tastings and initiatives dedicated to autumn products and in particular to the prized white truffle of the Bologna hills. Delicious "Tartumenus" will be offered in the participating restaurants and interesting "Tartuvisite" will help guests discover this territory. November 1, 2, 9, 16.

Many are the opportunities for those who visit the town of Calestano, near Parma, to taste the Fragno Black Truffle at the national fair, now in its 24th edition, set up to celebrate this typical local product. Besides enjoying truffle lunches in local restaurants and at food stands, looking around the markets, stands and the truffle market, more adventurous visitors can also take part in excursions and interesting guided tours of the areas where truffles grow. November 2, 9, 15, 16.

The typical seasonal products will be on display also in Mesola, near Ferrara, where the traditional event "Autumn Flavors" will take place. At the food stands, gluttons will be delighted by several recipes, including those made with the white truffle found in the woods in Mesola, while at the market exhibition visitors can find many traditional products, collectibles and small crafts. And for those who would like to take advantage of this event to get to know the local area, there will be free guided bike tours into the Great Mesola Woods, to the Museum of the Woods and Deer, to the Este Castle in Mesola or by boat along the Po in Goro, all of which are great opportunities to explore this region. October 31 and November 1-2.

For those staying in the Ferrara province, it is worth visiting the "Autumn Truffle Fair - Tuber Magnatum Pico" in Sant'Agostino, held in the Panfilia Woods, which is known for its flora and fauna, and where even today rare types of mushrooms and the highly sought-after white truffle can be found. So this event is a must for food lovers and professionals, and for three long weekends visitors can taste great dishes from the main menu of the fair all made using these prized underbrush products. November 7-9, 14-16, and 21-23.

The prized white truffle of the Bidente Valley will be the star of this fair held in the medieval town of Cusercoli, near Forlì.  On two consecutive Sundays, visitors will find delicious dishes made with truffles such as lasagna, tagliolini, polenta, sausages and eggs with truffles, as well as stands selling typical foodstuffs and local artistic crafts linked to the old traditional crafts of the Bidente Valley.  For fans of truffle gathering, there will be the "Italian Championship Final of truffle dogs", while history buffs and art lovers can go on a guided tour of the medieval castle of the Guidi Counts, with its church and bell tower.  November 9 and 16.

Mushrooms and truffles are also among the delights that can be found at the "28th olive and autumn products fair" in Coriano, a town just inland from Rimini in the valley of the Conca river, known for the quality if its extra-virgin olive oil and for its many presses that can be visited. The oil and other products will be offered in abundance along with Romagna wines, honey and its derivatives, cheeses, natural and macrobiotic products, fruit, plants, flowers, and even crafts, garden tools and sports equipment. There will also be themed exhibitions, demonstrations of ancient Romagna crafts, conventions and tastings to round out this great autumn festival. November 16 and 23.

Not very far away, Mondaino (RN) will also celebrate truffles along with fossa cheese and seasonal fruits with the fair "Fossa, Truffles and Venus". Fossa cheese has been produced for centuries in the pits of the castle of Mondaino and, along with black and white truffles, it is a prized product of this area in the Rimini hills.  This event is a great opportunity to wander among the various stands, visit the market of food products, eat at the food stands, the restaurants and "agriturismo", and to get to know the craftsmen of Mondaino and visit the Paleontology Museum.  November 16 and 23.

In the ancient medieval and hot springs town of Brisighella (RA), ranked among the "Most Beautiful Towns of Italy", the square in front of the historic road Via degli Asini will host "His Majesty the Truffle". During the fair, this most sought-after product of the Faenza hills will be paired with typical traditional dishes prepared by talented chefs at the local restaurants and at the food stands set up for this occasion. The "white autumn" truffle, with its particularly intense smell, will be on sale as well as black truffles and other fall products. November 23.
