Halloween, what a fright!

A whole week of chilling events will come back to light up the night in the city of mosaics from October 26 to November 2 for the Ravenna Nightmare Film Fest 2013. The international feature film competition, the heart of the event, will offer horror fans the best films from around the world.

On schedule are films from abroad such as the American "Go Down Death" by Aaron Schimberg and the Argentinian "El Desierto" by Christoph Behl.  There will also be European films such as the Italian "Oltre il Guado" by Lorenzo Bianchini and the British documentary "On Tender Hooks" by Kate Shenton. And of course premieres, meetings, special guests and much more.

At the Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, Halloween - with a medieval, fantasy, horror or Gothic flair - is truly the party of the year.  Chilling events, dinners, and guided tours with just candlelight will be held in 22 castles, fortresses, and manors of this group, with fun and conviviality for everyone.

This year the themes are the night, the devil, ghosts, vampires and candles.  Black witch costumes, pointy hats, brooms, garlic, magic wands, wigs, long white beards for wizards, or long black or purple fingernails if you are witches, are all welcome.  And for kids? Little ghost costumes, orange pumpkins, and fantasy characters would be very much appreciated.  And of course there is also the opportunity to book a room in these ancient buildings so you can enjoy the long night of Halloween until dawn.

In Romagna, on the night of All Saints, before going to bed it was custom to leave the table set.  Water, wine, bread and oil were left for the souls of the dead who came back for a visit.  So today this tradition has been renewed in Castrocaro Terme, just inland from Forli, but with a medieval twist.  Even the location is terrifying: the Castle on the cliff, which houses, inside its ancient walls, many mysteries.  Will visitors see the spirits of people who lived in this castle?  Come and find out from 8 pm on October 31 until deep into the night, guided by the wavering light of a torch.  The Castle Wine Bar will be transformed for this occasion into the "Tavern of Mysteries", where traditional Romagna-Tuscan dishes will be offered after so much fear.

In Riolo Terme, just inland from Ravenna, Samhain, the Celtic new year's celebration will be held.  This ancient festival was held at the end of the harvest when people celebrated the land being fallow and the beginning of the dark season, while waiting for a new beginning with the arrival of spring.  Some of these rituals have been maintained in the farming culture in this area.  Riolo Terme will celebrate all of this with a historic reenactment of the Celtic era, with parades of good and evil, with fire and lights, and a final bonfire, a collective ritual for bringing good luck to the new year.  Not only "trick or treat" but a chance to rediscover the rituals and customs of this area.

A big masquarade party will be held in the lovely lagoon city of Comacchio dedicated to children and adults. There will be three different entertainment points for small children.  Inside a haunted house, witches will show their little witch apprentices how to make magic potions and all the secrets of sorcery.  Fun workshops, face painting and entertainment all for children.  And when night falls, this event will be livened up by the musical notes of the Salento "pizzica" dance with the breaking of balloons filled with scary prizes including a trip for two to Transylvania.

In Rimini and nearby areas, Halloween is all about fear: games, entertainment, magic, tarot cards, face painting witches, music, pumpkins, stories, workshops for adults and children, not to mention the wonderful autumn smells and costume parades in the theme parks of Fiabilandia and Italia in Miniatura. Besides the many themed parties in clubs and commercial centers, it is also possible to spend a special night at the City Museum.  There will also be Halloween events with 5 tunnels of horror at Mirabilandia in which both adults and children will have reason to quiver with fright.

And if Halloween ends and you are still a little listless, the cooks of the court will be waiting for children in costume, and not only, on November 1 in the old and exceptionally beautiful town of Castell’Arquato, near Piacenza. Here scary sweets will be made, such as tarantulas and sliced fingers, concoctions of every kind and unexpected gummy things thanks to Sweet Halloween. All of this will be followed by a snack with the monstrous delights made and a visit to the fantastic Rocca Viscontea.
