Cattolica Aquarium

Inside historic buildings dating back to the 1930s, the Cattolica Aquarium is the most important aquarium of the Adriatic coast and the second largest in Italy. This varied marine world is the source of information and learning that is offered to families and children.

The aquarium is divided into four areas (Blue, Green, Yellow and Purple) all of which are are completely covered, with more than 3,000 animals of 400 different species including sharks, penguins, otters, sting rays, jellyfish, and many species of tropical and Mediterranean, and even land and freshwater, fauna and flora.

A visit here will be filled with excitement: like seeing the biggest bull sharks in Italy swim, slowly and majestically, in the big tank with more than 700,000 liters of seawater in the Blue area. Fun and curiosity are a guarantee with the friendly otters and the numerous family of Humboldt penguins, to whom “On the tracks of emperor penguins”, a fun area that takes small children to the South Pole to discover how penguins live during each season, is dedicated. There will also be the exhibition “Sharks, the perfect predators”, now part of the Purple area: an interesting journey, from the great white shark to the tiny Pygmy shark, to understand their genesis, evolution and habits. The Green Area is dedicated to reptiles, insects and exotic amphibians such as the lethal golden dart frogs of Central and South America, the strange frill-necked lizards, Australian insectivores, colorful chameleons, and Mexican iguanas.

Among the new attractions in 2017, the Blue area has become even more interactive to enchant both adults and kids with games, mystery boxes and surprises that can be found along the hallways. Absolutely new is the thrilling Night with the Sharks: children and adults can sleep in front of the big tank of bull sharks, after having experienced the nighttime visit of the Aquarium.

Interaction is one of the most loved aspects of this Aquarium by the public:  in the big touch tank, with the help of experts, visitors can experience what it is like to touch the Pelagic stingrays, flat sharks that are cousins of common rays, while with the biology guide, guests can also see the daily feeding of the sharks, penguins, otters and the Pelagic rays.

The park is open from April to mid-September and for the Christmas holiday.
