The Classense Library

The presence of Verdi in the Classense Library is marked in particular by ten of his letters from Paris to Angelo Mariani of Ravenna , one of the musicians and friends closest to him at least until a certain point in his life.

classense libraryThe correspondence dates to the period 1863 - 64 and consists almost exclusively of advice to Mariani regarding the best way to manage his career without succumbing to the flattery of false objectives.

Other documents conserved in the Theatre Fund of the Municipal Historical Archive of Ravenna in the Classense Library can be added to this correspondence along with other letters written by Mariani to prominent musicians and which contain references to Verdi.

Administrative documents, manifestos and opera librettos (for I Masnadieri in 1850 the 'usual' Ricordi is replaced by the Typographer Angeletti & Pattonico) show how Ravenna was fascinated, sometimes irresistibly, by Verdi's style.

The evidence goes back to Ernani in 1845 and goes on to include almost all the titles of the Maestro of Busseto, especially in the ten-year period 1850 - 59 during which Verdi was staged in almost every season.

To mention only the premières in Ravenna: 1850, I Masnadieri, 1851 Luisa Miller. 1853 Rigoletto, 1854 Il Trovatore, 1855 Macbeth, 1856 La Traviata, 1850 Arnaldo.

The documents of the Theatrical Archive were inventoried in a recent project in collaboration with the Faculty of the Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the University of Bologna and can now be consulted along with the documents mentioned above in the Classense Library of Ravenna.
