National Institute of Verdi Studies

The library, which came into being with the foundation of the Institute, concentrates on the life and work of Giuseppe Verdi and, more generally, takes the form of a specialised collection relating to the history and culture of the 19th century.

Alongside the most up-to-date reference works we find a section dedicated to the musical literature on Verdi - books, extracts, monographs, editions of letters, scene arrangements, libretto sources and doctoral theses as well as the complete works of Verdi and Rossini and correspondence between Verdi and Arrigo Boito.

The Verdi musical section contains facsimiles of autographs, orchestral scores for voice and piano in various print editions, separated pieces of the arrangements for various instruments and librettos.

Other sections deal respectively with music, history and 19th century culture in general.

Attention is also drawn to the numerous periodicals of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Scalvini Fund which includes 565 scores and the collection of about 2,000 records of Verdi's music donated by Carl L. Brun of which the oldest dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.
